Wildenburg and Crottorf Castle offer two different ways to explore history and architecture: here, a keep and its Baroque cupola shape the view; there, a moated castle complex. There are also two chapels with their own architectural styles, a cycling route to the moated castle, and a starting point for the Witches’ Trail. This gives you a range of options to focus on when planning your stay.

Wildenburg: Mountain Spur and the History of Lordship

Wildenburg stands on a mountain spur above the Wiesental valley. Its keep is more than 25 metres high and topped with a Baroque cupola. The tower’s height and distinctive cupola give the complex two specific architectural features. The castle also played a historical role as the main seat of the Lords of Wildenburg. Gerhard von Arenberg was associated with it and called himself “Gerardus de Wildenberg” in 1239. Its location, architecture and recorded name bring landscape, architecture and history together.

Crottorf Castle: Moated Castle and Landscape

Crottorf Castle lies in the Wildenburger Land, considered a natural and undeveloped landscape. The complex is regarded as the only moated castle of its kind in the northeast of Rhineland-Palatinate and one of the best-preserved moated castles in the Rhineland. This classification brings two measures together: its unique status in the northeastern part of the state and its state of preservation in the wider Rhineland. Crottorf is first recorded in 1144 as “Crutorp”. The exterior of the moated castle can be viewed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. As seasonal visiting information can change, check the conditions before your visit.

Chapels and Local History

St. Anne’s Chapel, also known locally as the Red Chapel, was built by Franciscan monks in the 17th century. Its location is linked to the history of the witch trials at Wildenburg. St. Roch’s Chapel offers a different architectural comparison: it is a square, plastered rubble-stone building with a Welsch dome and was probably built by Franciscans in the 17th century. The chapels therefore highlight different aspects: for St. Anne’s, the period of construction and local historical connections; for St. Roch’s, its specific architectural style and the cautiously worded dating.

Cycling Route, Witches’ Trail and Bus

For a cycling trip, the Westerwald Loop from Wissen to Daaden is a specific option: it reaches Crottorf Castle and passes through the historic Wildenburger Land. Check the route details before setting off. A direct starting point for the Witches’ Trail is at the corner of Hauptstraße and Klosterstraße in Friesenhagen; check the access conditions before setting out. Bus route 265 connects Freudenberg, Friesenhagen and Wissen and serves the Festplatz Friesenhagen stop. Check the current route and stops before travelling. This information can help with different decisions: the cycling route passes several named places, while the Witches’ Trail is located by a precisely specified starting point.

Further Perspectives in the Wider Altenkirchen Destination

The wider Altenkirchen destination offers further historical perspectives. In 1849, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen founded the “Flammersfelder Hülfsverein zur Unterstützung unbemittelter Landwirthe” in Flammersfeld, the world’s first cooperative credit society. Marienthal remains a popular place of pilgrimage today. There, the Klosterdorfweg trail leads around the former Franciscan monastery through the shaded spa forest of the Archdiocese of Cologne. Altenkirchen thus broadens the picture with cooperative history, pilgrimage and a monastery trail.
