The Elkenroth Pond and the E1 Circular Trail offer two different ways to experience nature during a stay in Elkenroth. If you prefer to explore the area around the water, you can take the nature trail around the pond. The circular trail includes other landscape features and eventually leads back to Elkenroth.

Pond and Nature Reserves

The Elkenroth Pond covers just under eight hectares. Anglers and nature lovers can relax here; the nature trail around the water is ideal for longer walks. If you would like to visit the area, check the local access requirements before setting out.

Elkenroth borders four nature reserves: Rosenheimer Lay, Lindianseifen, Weidenbruch and Hasselichskopf. Together, they cover around 200 hectares. The E1 Circular Trail also passes through two of these areas, Weidenbruch and Hasselichskopf.

The E1 Circular Trail

The E1 Circular Trail starts at the Elkenroth Community Centre and passes the Elkenroth Pond, the Weidenbruch Nature Reserve, wetlands and a former clay and sand extraction site. It then passes the Hasselichskopf Nature Reserve, the Hexeneiche natural monument and the former Käuser Steimel quarry before returning to Elkenroth.

The difference from the nature trail lies in the focus: the nature trail goes around the pond, while the E1 also includes nature reserves, wetlands, a natural monument and former extraction sites. This lets you choose between a walk by the water and a circular route featuring several named landscape landmarks. Before setting out, check the trail conditions and signage locally.

Sights in Elkenroth

Elkenroth’s local sights include St. Elisabeth Catholic Parish Church, the old Backes (communal bakehouse), the Canisius Fountain and Steinborn Park. Steinborn Park has a Kneipp foot bath and wheels from a former sand mill.

Those who would like to include local sights in their plans alongside nature can find a range of points of interest here. The named attractions include the parish church, the Backes and fountain, as well as features of the park.

Accommodation and Local Amenities

For overnight stays, Elkenroth has a small country hotel with wellness facilities, as well as guesthouses and inns. Cafés add to the local visitor amenities. Check current services and availability before travelling, as business operations may change.

In the wider Altenkirchen destination

In the wider Altenkirchen destination, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen founded the “Flammersfelder Hülfsverein zur Unterstützung unbemittelter Landwirthe” (Flammersfeld Aid Association for the Support of Needy Farmers) in Flammersfeld in 1849. It was the world’s first loan fund association. In Marienthal, the Klosterdorfweg trail runs around the former Franciscan monastery and through the Archdiocese of Cologne’s shady spa forest. Marienthal remains a popular pilgrimage site today.

The two places offer different highlights within the wider Altenkirchen destination: Flammersfeld is known for its historic association founding, while Marienthal is known for the Klosterdorfweg trail and its pilgrimage site. The broader region therefore offers both a historical perspective and one shaped by landscape and religion.
