In the Elmpter Schwalmbruch, various landscape types are protected by law as habitats: swamp and marsh forests, wet meadows rich in sedges and rushes, dry grasslands, dwarf-shrub, broom and juniper heaths, as well as flowing waters and standing inland waters. Wet meadows and forests sit alongside drier heathland and grassland. The area’s natural character is therefore reflected in a range of habitats, not just a single type of landscape.
Experience the Landscape at Schwalmbruch
A short detour from the route lets you discover the largest juniper heath on the left bank of the Lower Rhine and restored former channels of the Schwalm from an observation tower. It’s a specific addition to your hike: alongside the changing landscapes along the trail, the tower offers views of heathland and former river channels that have been restored.
Compare Hiking and Cycling
The premium “Schwalmbruch” hiking trail is 15.5 kilometres long in total and can be divided into shorter sections. Its route alternates between wild forests and orderly agricultural landscapes, repeatedly following the Schwalm. The total distance and the option to split the route into sections help you plan your hike without having to tackle the trail as one continuous tour.
The Niederkrüchten cycling circuit starts at the town hall in Niederkrüchten-Elmpt. It passes Haus Elmpt, goes through the Elmpter Wald and the “Lüsekamp und Boschbeek” nature reserve, then continues to the Elmpter Schwalmbruch and the Chapel of St. Mary at the Heath. The two routes have different emphases: the premium hiking trail focuses on changing landscapes and the Schwalm, while the cycling circuit can be understood through its starting point and the stops along the way.
Archives and Historic Places
At the local history archive in Haus Hansen, you can consult collections on clubs, individuals, chronicles, local customs and regional topics. The archive is open on the first Saturday of every month from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Check the opening hours before you travel. The address is Laurentiusstr. 15, 41372 NiederkrĂĽchten-Elmpt.
The historical dates also highlight different aspects: the Elmpt Chapel of St. Mary at the Heath in Overhetfeld was first mentioned in 1703. Haus Elmpt manor house dates from the 15th century, while its Baroque gate tower dates from 1750. For the chapel, the date refers to its first mention; for Haus Elmpt, it refers to the age of the manor house and the later date of the gate tower. This places both sites in their historical context without reducing their histories to the same date.
More Options in the Wider Destination of NiederkrĂĽchten
The wider destination of Niederkrüchten also offers excursions around Lake Hariksee. The 3.5-kilometre A 5 circular route links the two excursion destinations on the lake and offers views of the water. You can rent boats at Inselschlösschen and Mühlrather Mühle and explore Lake Hariksee under your own power. Another option is a trip on the excursion boat “Patschel”. Thus, in Niederkrüchten, alongside Elmpt’s natural and cultural attractions, you can choose between a circular walk with lake views and different ways of exploring the water.
