Bergkamen can be explored through a variety of highlights: an extensive network of cycling and hiking trails, views and art at the Großes Holz slag heap, and Roman history at Roman Park. Marina Rünthe and the nature attractions at Beversee also offer their own distinctive experiences. When planning, it helps to first consider whether you mainly want to hike, cycle, explore culture or combine nature-related activities.

Trails and views at the Bergehalde

Bergkamen has a network of cycling and hiking trails spanning around 100 kilometres. A particular highlight is the Großes Holz slag heap: it covers 140 hectares and offers more than 40 kilometres of hiking trails. These figures refer to different scales—the city’s network includes cycling and hiking trails, while the figure for the slag heap refers to hiking trails in that area.

From Adener Höhe on the slag heap, the view extends across the Münsterland, the Sauerland, and the eastern and western Ruhr region. The summit is also home to IMPULS Bergkamen, a light-art installation by Maik and Dirk Löbbert. The slag heap thus offers both landscape views and art as distinct reasons to visit.

Roman history at Roman Park

Roman Park Bergkamen features a Roman timber-and-earth wall rebuilt according to original models. The Archaeological Educational Trail complements this structure with information about life in the camp. The park thus combines a specific reconstructed structure with insight into life in the camp.

Roman Park offers guided tours, museum education programs and holiday activities for children, designed for school classes, families and adult groups. Which programs are available depends on the current visitor schedule. Check it if you want to combine your visit with a particular activity.

Cycling route, marina and Beversee

The Römer-Lippe Route leads to Marina Rünthe and Roman Park in Bergkamen. It provides a way to combine cycling with two different destinations: the Roman theme at the park and the harbour at the marina.

The Westphalian Marina Rünthe Water Sports Centre is one of the largest marinas in North Rhine-Westphalia and has more than 300 recreational boats. This makes the marina a distinct highlight alongside the town’s hiking and cultural attractions. It is therefore quite different from the slag heap and Roman Park, which offer their own separate visitor experiences.

Beversee offers another nature-focused experience: you can enjoy hikes along the Industrial Nature Route and bat tours there. Beversee Nature Reserve is connected to the Industrial Nature Route. Unlike the Bergehalde, where trails and views are a key focus, the route and bat tours take centre stage here.
