The G4 – Eudenberg geowalk starts at the car park by Eudenbach Church; Eudenberg itself, however, is an inaccessible quarry closed to visitors. This distinction shapes your plans: Eudenbach brings together the subjects of church architecture and religious tradition with a history of quarrying and named geowalks.

Church and religious tradition

Eudenbach Parish Church was built in 1912 as a three-aisled Neo-Romanesque church, based on plans by Bonn architect Friedrich Tasche. “Three-aisled” describes the division of a church interior into a central nave and side aisles; the Neo-Romanesque classification refers to its architectural style. The church windows are also among its historical details: Willy de Graaf of Essen-Werden designed them in 1954. The church’s construction therefore brings two different points in time into view: its construction at the beginning of the 20th century and the later design of its windows.

The present-day chapel in nearby Quirrenbach was built in 1894; its history dates back to 1734. Since 1999, a procession from Eudenbach to Quirrenbach has taken place each year on the Feast of the Assumption. The chapel and procession combine a long history with a recurring religious occasion. If you would like to plan your trip around the procession, check the date for the year in question.

Quarry history and geowalks

Eudenberg is a disused quarry with several extraction levels in the area of a former volcanic cone. After quarrying operations at Eudenberg ceased, a protected biotope developed there. The quarry is inaccessible and closed to visitors. So do not plan to visit the quarry itself; check before your trip whether it is still closed.

The starting point for a hike is clearly specified for the G4 – Eudenberg geowalk: it begins at the car park by Eudenbach Church, Eudenbacher Straße 109, 53639 Königswinter. The “Siebengebirge – Geowalk: Hühnerberg” offers a different geological perspective. It explains the importance of stone quarrying in the Siebengebirge, including the Oberpleiser Land and Oberhaus. While the starting point provides orientation for the G4, the history of stone quarrying is the focus of the Hühnerberg walk.

The former Eudenbach forester’s house on Eudenbacher Straße is also part of the village’s history: it is a listed building dating from 1890. Together with the parish church, it represents a different historical focus from the former quarry landscape. A stay in Eudenbach can therefore take in both religious architectural history and traces of the land’s earlier use.

More topics in the wider destination of Königswinter

In the wider destination of Königswinter, the Petersberg site offers a distinct focus. Its visitor centre presents the history of the grounds in an exhibition spanning five areas. One area is devoted to the natural environment of Petersberg, another to the building’s former role as a guardhouse and its security features. The Rheinsteig trail runs directly past the Petersberg site. The exhibition and access to the site are barrier-free; if you have specific access requirements, check them before your trip.

Also in the wider destination of Königswinter, the Brückenhof Museum presents other aspects of regional history. Its permanent exhibition includes an early 20th-century kitchen, a fully equipped shoemaker’s workshop and the “Weilberg” model depicting the Heisterbacher Talbahn. This narrow-gauge railway ran through the Heisterbach Valley from 1889 to 1950. Special exhibitions focus on the history of local associations and places, as well as works by local artists. A visit to the museum therefore offers a different focus from Eudenbach’s religious and geological topics.

Tailor your stay

This distinction helps you tell Eudenbach’s local church and geology topics apart from Königswinter’s distinct cultural and natural attractions before you look for a holiday apartment.
