The Natursteig Sieg gives Bohlscheid a clear focus for a hiking trip: the landscape around the village is shaped by wooded slopes, open meadows and far-reaching views. From Oberbohlscheid, you can see across fields and meadows to the hills of the Bergisches Land. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether you want the trails and scenery around Bohlscheid to be the main focus, or whether nature and cultural attractions in the wider destination of Eitorf should also play a part.
In the area around Eitorf, the Naturregion Sieg offers hiking and cycling trails through forests and valleys; there are also opportunities for canoeing on the Sieg. The wider region therefore offers more than hiking, including cycling tours and activities on the water.
Hiking trails and scenery around Bohlscheid
The marked Natursteig Sieg trail passes through the Bohlscheid area. Narrow paths run near the Ăśberbuschbach stream; from there, the route continues over the Kelterser Berg. The route thus combines wooded slopes and open meadows with sections closer to streams and fields. Vegetation and visibility can vary depending on the season.
Stage 4 of the Natursteig Sieg is 14.7 kilometres long and runs between Merten station and Eitorf station. The trail passes through Bohlscheid and continues from there over the Kelterser Berg and the Sieg bridge to Eitorf. The stage length describes the entire hike between the two stations; it is not the length of the section through Bohlscheid.
Stage 4 and train planning
The stations at either end of the route are relevant for travelling to and from the stage: lines S12 and S19 stop in Merten, while RE9, S12 and S19 stop in Eitorf. Timetables can change, so it is advisable to check departures before your trip. Trail conditions and forestry work can also temporarily affect whether the route is accessible.
More nature and cultural attractions in the wider destination of Eitorf
The Giovanni Vetere Sculpture Garden is in the centre of Eitorf, beside a small stream, and covers 15,000 square metres. It features stone and wooden sculptures, stainless-steel objects and bronze sculptures. The garden therefore offers a cultural focus alongside the scenery and hiking attractions around Bohlscheid.
In the Siegaue nature reserve, the section between the bridge at Eitorf-Alzenbach and Eitorf-Merten includes smooth meadow-grass meadows where the great burnet grows. These meadows provide a habitat for the dusky large blue butterfly. The connection between the plant, the meadow and the butterfly makes this part of the wider destination of Eitorf a nature attraction in its own right.
In the Hüppelröttchen woodland, Melli’s bee discovery trail lets you feel the language of bees, see a flower meadow from a bee’s perspective and take on the tasks of a forager or guard bee in the “honeycomb game”. Also at Hüppelröttchen, the forest trail features 23 “Flip open and learn” panels about trees, as well as 11 clearly illustrated information panels on other forest topics. The two educational trails offer different experiences: one makes the life of bees interactive, while the other focuses on trees and other forest topics.
