Oberhundem is best explored through two themes: trails through forests and rocky outcrops, and the town’s architectural history. This officially recognized climatic health resort and holiday destination lies in the upper Hundem Valley in the southern Sauerland, right on the Rothaarsteig trail. The Oberhundem Mountain Tour and St. Lambertus offer different highlights; the Nature Park Information Centre adds insights into stream habitats, charcoal burning and the Sauerland Rothaargebirge Nature Park. This lets you shape your stay around hiking, architecture and nature.

Hiking between forests and cliffs

The Oberhundem Mountain Tour is designated as a premium hiking trail in the low mountain range. It starts at the spa gardens and runs mainly along lightly surfaced forest tracks through varied woodland. This describes the character of the trail without assuming a specific walking time or level of difficulty. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check the latest trail information before setting out.

The Oberhundem Cliffs are another destination to consider when planning a hike: several trails pass by them, including the Rothaarsteig spur trail Oberhundemer Bergtour. This allows you to choose between the route explicitly designated as a premium trail and other trails that include the cliffs as a waypoint. The tour can be reached by public transport via the “Oberhundem” bus stop; a walking connection leads from the stop to the trail. Check the current timetable before travelling.

Baroque architectural history at St. Lambertus

St. Lambertus is a listed Baroque hall church with a Romanesque tower. The three-bay hall church was built between 1769 and 1771 under the direction of Ignatius Gehly. The furnishings are a separate matter: much of the church’s uniform Baroque interior was created by Johann Eberhard Schweickardt, with work carried out between 1770 and 1775. These two periods therefore offer different insights into the church’s construction and design.

The Oberhundem Embroidery Museum also offers a glimpse into historic crafts. It is housed in a listed rectory dating from 1685 and displays antique hand embroidery in restored historic rooms. Together, the church and museum represent different aspects of Oberhundem’s history: sacred architecture and textile craftsmanship.

Nature Park Information Centre and practical information

The Oberhundem Nature Park Information Centre focuses on stream habitats and the traditional craft of charcoal burning. An interactive multi-touch table offers virtual explorations of the Sauerland Rothaargebirge Nature Park. Topics and interactive features may change, so check the latest information before planning a visit.

For planning an e-bike trip, there is a specific place to go: a charging station is located to the right of the entrance at the Haus des Gastes, run by the Oberhundem Tourist and Transport Association (e.V.). If needed, check before travelling whether the information about the facility is still current.

Kirchhundem as a broader travel destination

The wider destination of Kirchhundem offers other distinct attractions. Panorama Park Sauerland is an 80-hectare wildlife and adventure park in Kirchhundem. In Kirchhundem-Silberg, the Kulturgut Schrabben Hof combines a local history museum with a nostalgic café, an old bakehouse and a theater barn in an ensemble of buildings that are largely listed.

The museum at Schrabben Hof tells the story of life in a Sauerland village and the mining history of Silberg across approximately 250 square metres. It also provides information about nature reserves in the region and displays fossils and minerals that shed light on the history of the Earth. The historic Rhein-Weser Tower on Westerberg offers another perspective on local history: the 24-metre-high observation tower is part of the Kirchhundem destination and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
