Water engineering, urban history and sacred art give Minden its many different facets. At the waterway junction, you can explore a remarkable complex of bridges and locks; in the old town, cobblestones and closely connected half-timbered houses lead through the upper and lower towns. The cathedral, cathedral treasury and Minden Museum add historical and cultural perspectives to your visit.

Waterway Junction and Ship Mill

The Minden Waterway Junction includes a 341-metre-long canal bridge over the Weser. It has been in place since the Rhine–Weser Canal opened in 1906. The waterway junction is considered the largest double waterway junction in the world. If you would like to see more than just the outside of the complex, you can join a guided tour lasting around two hours: at the information centre, models, graphics and maps provide an overview of the junction and its surroundings. The tour then continues to the modern Weser lock and the historic shaft lock. Tour dates may vary; check the current schedule if you are planning this visit.

Another way to explore the themes of water and mills is to visit the ship mill on the Weser, near Minden city centre. It is the only operational ship mill in Germany. Visitors can learn from the millers how grain is turned into flour; the mill also has a restaurant. In Minden, both the large-scale water engineering complex and the traditional practice of milling on the water are featured as distinct topics.

Old Town, Cathedral and City Museum

Cobblestone lanes and closely connected half-timbered houses characterize the upper and lower towns. You can explore the old town route independently using a town map or digitally via Komoot. If you prefer to hear stories and background information as part of a guided tour, Minden offers various city and themed tours about the city’s history. Their dates may vary; check the current times if a tour is important to your stay.

The history of Minden Cathedral stretches back more than 1,200 years. It began at the end of the 8th century with the construction of a simple, towerless hall church on the cathedral hill. The cathedral treasury houses, among other items, the Minden Cross, the St. Peter’s Shrine and the Silver Madonna. For pilgrims on the Sigwardsweg and on the Way of St. James Route No. 3 from Minden to Soest, the cathedral treasury also serves as a stamping station and information point.

The cathedral treasury is accessible to visitors with mobility needs. If you have questions, contact visitor services in the foyer at Kleiner Domhof 24; check your specific requirements before travelling. The cathedral treasury app provides information about the exhibits and events in the treasury and Minden Cathedral.

The Minden Museum explores the city’s distinctive character in the past, present and future. Its permanent exhibition on the city’s history is divided into seven chapters, each offering a different perspective; special exhibitions add to the programme. The permanent exhibition also covers the region’s prehistory and early history. The multimedia city model currently offers seven different multimedia city tours. You can explore the city’s history either through the exhibition themes or by taking one of the tours.

A Wider Look at Minden-Lübbecke

The Minden-Lübbecke Mill District has 43 operational windmills, watermills and horse mills. The LandArt Route is also based there: it connects more than 80 arts and cultural sites along five sections. These regional offerings broaden the picture of Minden, while the district’s distinctive features remain separate from the city’s attractions.

If you are looking for a hotel in Minden, you can plan your stay around the topics that interest you most: city history and the cathedral treasury, exploring the old town, or water engineering and mills. A guided tour of the waterway junction takes around two hours; you can explore the old town route independently. Check tour dates in advance and plan your visit so you have time to take breaks as well as enjoy the experiences you choose.
