Baumberg combines Roman finds with local history and routes through natural areas. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the destinations by their respective themes and geographical locations. Some activities are also affected by the weather, season or public holidays.

Roman Finds and Baumberg History

The Haus BĂĽrgel Roman Museum presents Roman archaeological finds in eight exhibition rooms within the walls of the former fort. Here, the finds and the architectural setting form a shared focus: the subject encompasses both Roman finds and the site of the former fort.

Another landmark in Baumberg is the Catholic Church of St. Dionysius. Its tower is 34 metres high and is believed to date from the mid-13th century. On Kirchberg stands a lime tree estimated to be around 260 years old, which has been designated a protected natural monument. The tower and tree offer a different focus from the Roman finds: alongside architectural history, attention turns to a protected natural monument.

Until the 20th century, Baumberg’s livelihoods included Rhine fishing, agriculture, goat breeding and traditional crafts such as basket weaving. The Eel Fishing Museum focuses on the fishing aspect of local history: it is housed aboard the historic eel-fishing vessel “Fiat Voluntas” and conveys the history of Rhine fishing as well as everyday life aboard an eel-fishing vessel. The museum is closed until further notice due to construction work. The museum car park is also currently unavailable because of the construction work. Check the latest status before visiting.

Nature Reserves and Routes

When planning nature visits and routes, it is important to distinguish between two geographical areas. Haus Bürgel is located in the Urdenbacher Kämpe Nature Reserve, in the Baumberg district of Monheim. The Baumberg Discovery Loop, on the other hand, runs through the Baumberger Aue Nature Reserve. The route is weather-dependent, so it is advisable to check conditions before setting off. This helps distinguish the area around Haus Bürgel from the area traversed by the Discovery Loop.

For cycling, the City-Country-River Tour is another option. This circular cycling route lets you explore the natural landscape around the Monheim and Baumberg districts. The descriptions therefore emphasize different geographical areas: the Discovery Loop runs through the Baumberger Aue, while the cycling tour takes in the landscape around both districts. Another cycling option with a set time slot is the Monheim-Baumberg after-work tour. It starts at 6 pm every Thursday from May to September. Check the specific dates for the season and any possible cancellations in advance.

The weekly market also has a set day: it takes place every Friday in the Baumberg district. Dates may change on public holidays, so check the calendar in advance if you plan to visit the market. The market and after-work tour follow different schedules: the market takes place on Fridays, while the cycling tour is additionally limited to Thursdays from May to September, with an 6 pm start. When choosing a date, therefore, take the day of the week, the season and possible public-holiday changes into account.
