Haldern combines named historic sights with woodland, heathland and cycling landscapes. When planning your trip, you can look at the local attractions from two perspectives: architectural and local history on the one hand, and routes and landscapes on the other. The following places and routes show how these areas of interest differ.

Historic Sights in Haldern

Haldern’s sights include the Catholic parish church of St. George, the Protestant church dating from 1783, the Wesendonk House from the early 19th century, the Doppeladler Inn from the 19th century, and the late-medieval Battenberg Tower. This mix of churches, a house, an inn and a tower offers a range of architectural points of interest; the dates span the late-medieval tower and the church from 1783 to the buildings of the 19th century. If you would like to visit individual buildings, check access arrangements in advance, as they may vary.

Further Cultural Heritage and Landscapes

Haldern’s further cultural heritage includes Haus Aspel, with a landscaped park and a medieval motte, as well as the Schledenhorst Chapel, home to a historically significant Crucifixion group from around 1500. These two cultural attractions offer different highlights: Haus Aspel brings together a park landscape and a motte, while the Crucifixion group is the focus at the chapel. You can choose between them according to whether you are more interested in a historic site with a park or in the Crucifixion group from around 1500.

For outdoor excursions, Sonsfeld Forest and the nearby Klosterheide and Wittenhorster Heide offer landscapes for walking and cycling; dunes can also be seen there. The nearby Hagener or Sonsfelder Meer is an old arm of the Rhine, bordered by meadows, pastures and pollarded willows. Woodlands and heathland with visible dunes therefore offer a different kind of scenery from the Rhine arm framed by meadows and trees. As routes and access arrangements may change, check conditions before setting out on a specific trip.

Cycling Routes for Different Interests

A cycle route runs from Haldern to Haffen via the Sonsfeld–Haffen cycle route. Another route loops around the Reeser Meer and connects with the Sonsfeld–Haffen route near Alt-Sonsfeld. The routes have different points of reference: the first connects Haldern and Haffen, while the second follows the Reeser Meer and links up near Alt-Sonsfeld. You can choose according to whether the connection between the two named places or the loop around the Reeser Meer better suits your plans. Before setting off, it is a good idea to check for any construction or maintenance work that could temporarily affect cycling infrastructure.

Further Highlights in the Wider Destination of Rees

Rees itself lies directly on the Rhine. The historic town fortifications of Rees comprise six consecutive defensive systems dating from the 12th to the 18th century, built by four European nations. The Municipal Koenraad Bosman Museum Rees focuses on art and local history. These distinct attractions add to the wider destination without replacing Haldern’s own sights.

The approximately 22-kilometre Planet Route starts at the sculpture park in Rees. It follows the Lower Rhine’s first planet trail onto the dike, along the cycle route to Rees-Mehr. If you plan to take this route, check for any temporary diversions before setting off.
