In Sandebeck, specific hiking options meet striking church architecture and a landscape with two distinct hilltops. The history of the Sandebeck Volcano also shapes the view of the surrounding area. When planning a trip, visitors can choose from hiking trails, a cycle tour, cultural attractions and nature-related activities.

Hiking Trails and a Cycle Tour with Clear Starting Points

The A4 hiking trail starts in Sandebeck at an information board in a hiking car park west of the village, near the forester’s lodge. Another hiking reference point is Sandebeck station on the Herford–Paderborn railway line: it serves as a starting point for hikes into the Eggegebirge on the E1, the European long-distance path. The two descriptions offer different points of orientation—the A4 starts at the board in the car park, while the E1 starts at the station.

For cycling, Tour 3 – Graf Metternich Brunnen Tour provides another starting point. In Sandebeck, it passes very close to St. Dionysius Church. This gives visitors a named starting point for a hiking route and a cycle tour with a cultural connection in the village—without implying that they are connected routes.

Velmerstot and the Sandebeck Volcano

Prussian Velmerstot is the southern summit of Velmerstot. Its summit, at about 464 m above sea level, lies in the Steinheim-Sandebeck area in the district of Höxter. The Egge Tower stands on it; the whole of Velmerstot is part of the Teutoburg Forest / Egge Hills Nature Park. The Lippe Velmerstot has a different character: the northern summit is 441.4 m high and features heathland and rugged sandstone cliffs. The two high points thus differ both in elevation and in their described features.

Another geological feature is the Sandebeck Volcano. It formed during the Miocene and is between 7 and 14 million years old. An abandoned basalt quarry lies on the volcano and has been protected as a natural monument since 1974. Its formation, age and protected status make the volcano a topic in its own right, alongside the hills and their landscapes.

Church Architecture and Local Features

St. Dionysius is a three-aisled hall church in the Neo-Gothic style. Its copper-roofed tower stands on the west side and is 48 metres high. Items from the previous church have been preserved: an offering box dating from 1588, a holy water font from 1620 and a baptismal font from 1627. The church is also known as “Eggedom”. Cycle Tour 3 passes close by.

A long walk leads to Gut Wintrup, an imposing natural-stone building with a half-timbered upper storey. A statue of St. John of Nepomuk can also be seen at a crossroads near an estate. It stands somewhat hidden among shrubs and trees, off the path. Sandebeck’s herb bundle is another local tradition; in its local form, it contains 24 parts of plants.

The Christmas market in Sandebeck is organised every two years by Dorfwerkstatt Sandebeck. The next market is planned for Advent 2026. The Vincenzhaus has stalls selling homemade goods from the village and beyond; food and drink are planned for the forecourt and the neighbouring village café. The market thus provides a specific seasonal event, distinct from the hiking, architectural and landscape features described as permanent attractions.

More Trails in the Wider Steinheim Destination

The wider Steinheim destination also offers varied hiking landscapes: four of the six signposted A trails run in and southwest of Steinheim Forest. A1 and A2 follow forest roads throughout, passing through species-rich mixed deciduous woodland. A3 and A4 circle Hahneberg through a landscape of meadows, pastures and fields between the Emmer and Steinheim Forest. These descriptions of trails in Steinheim complement the Sandebeck starting points with other types of landscape, without presenting them as features of Sandebeck.
