Four named circular routes make it easy to choose a hike in Schanze: the routes range from the 0.9 km Kyrill-Pfad to the 4.9 km SchlĂĽmperbrĂĽche-Weg. In between are the 2.3 km Escheid-Weg and the 3 km Langelscheid-Weg.
Hiking by distance and theme
The Escheid-Weg is rated easy, while the SchlĂĽmperbrĂĽche-Weg is rated moderate. These difficulty levels complement the comparison by distance and provide another way to guide your choice. Schanze is also a starting point for hikes on the Rothaarsteig, the Kyrillpfad, the Weg der Sinne and the WaldSkulpturenWeg Wittgenstein-Sauerland. A suspension bridge is another hiking destination.
The WaldSkulpturenWeg combines nature and contemporary art: eleven installations, sculptures and artworks lie along the approximately 23 km route between Bad Berleburg and Schmallenberg. The route recommends a detour to the Kyrillpfad in Schanze. This offers a choice between a short loop and a longer route with a cultural focus.
Before setting out, it is worth checking the route: forestry diversions may affect the circular routes, and diversions on the WaldSkulpturenWeg may also change. Conditions vary on individual hiking trails.
A seasonal winter option
The ski area in Schanze is located right on the Rothaarsteig at an altitude of about 720 m. Whether winter sports are possible depends on snow and operating conditions. If you would like to plan your stay around this focus, check current conditions in advance. This helps you distinguish the seasonal option from the various hiking destinations when planning.
More things to explore in the wider Schmallenberg destination
The wider Schmallenberg destination offers additional cultural, nature and cycling attractions. Schmallenberg’s old town has a uniform Neoclassical architectural style and many restored half-timbered houses. Schmallenberg also has a family adventure trail about three kilometres long, with 13 stations about forests, animals, wood and birds. The 84-kilometre Sauerlandradring connects Finnentrop, Eslohe, Schmallenberg and Lennestadt and follows former railway lines. At about three kilometres, the family adventure trail is considerably shorter than the 84-kilometre Sauerlandradring.
A guided historical tour of Schmallenberg offers insights into the town’s history and introduces local characters such as the Floigenkasper and the Breybalg. Check current dates and booking arrangements if you would like to plan a tour.
In Schmallenberg-Latrop, the forestry museum displays historical tools, pictures of former forest and village life, historical forester’s office records, and information about the development of the chainsaw. The forest workers’ and foresters’ trail starts in Latrop, is 4.5 km long and has 17 stations about forest ecology and timber use. The wider destination’s thematic offering therefore ranges from local history and cycling to forest history and forest ecology.
