Helminghausen lies below the dam in the Diemel Valley. The village is a state-recognized health resort in North Rhine-Westphalia. When planning your visit, you can choose from several distinct options: hiking trails by the reservoir, circular routes around the lake, leisure activities in the village and traces of its history. This lets you decide whether to focus on routes on foot, by bike or on individual local sights.

Hiking Between the Circular Trail and the Diemelsteig

The Diemel Dam near Helminghausen is an Intze-type gravity dam, 42 metres high above its foundation. The “Rund um den Weiher” circular trail passes the dam and the power station and includes the “Ehemalige Mühle” rest area.

One hiking option is the 8.1-kilometre “Berg und Tal Helminghausen HL2” circular route, which starts and ends at Helminghausen Church. The much longer Diemelsteig is 63 kilometres long and is a quality hiking trail through the entire Diemelsee holiday region. You can join it from any of the villages along the route. In Helminghausen, the trail leads to the hiking car park and continues towards the dam.

The ferry-boat hiking trail also takes in a loop around Lake Diemel. You can combine it with a boat trip on the “MS Muffert”; the boat trip is an optional addition and is not required for every route option. The starting point is the Diemelsee large car park, Am See 8, 34431 Marsberg-Helminghausen.

Cycling and Leisure Activities in the Village

There is a playground and boat hire at Helminghausen lido. The 15-kilometre cycle path around Lake Diemel recommends the Old Manor Garden in Helminghausen as a stop along the way. It features a Pit-Pat course and a table-tennis table, as well as multi-generational fitness equipment, a calisthenics area and a Mensch-Ärgere-Dich-Nicht game board. The Pit-Pat course is centrally located in Helminghausen, right next to the historic manor house. The manor garden therefore offers two specific points of interest for planning your visit: it is recommended as a stop on the cycle path and is home to the leisure facilities listed above.

Local History and Buildings

Helminghausen was first mentioned in a document from Bredelar Monastery in 1325. The Catholic church was originally built in 1906/07 in the Romanesque style, with a roof turret. A roof turret is a tower-like structure on the roof; the term therefore describes a different type of structure from a free-standing church tower. The Old Manor House in Helminghausen was built in 1680/81.

At the war memorial stands a bell frame holding Helminghausen’s old school bell; the bell frame was erected there in 2004. The “Am Birkenhof” chapel was built through the initiative of a family living there. A signposted circular trail in Helminghausen presents historical events from the village and points out local sights. It thus brings together local history and wayfinding in one circular route.
