St. Ullrich, the oldest village cross, and the history of Weiler Manor provide tangible points of reference for the village’s history. At the same time, the focus turns to historic roads between Erftstadt and Zülpich, as well as to the landscape. This distinction is useful when planning a trip: some topics relate directly to Weiler in der Ebene, while others concern a wider area.

Church and Village History

The present three-bay brick hall church of St. Ullrich was consecrated in 1892. “Three-bay” describes how the church interior is divided into three bays and gives a more precise sense of the hall church’s structure. The middle of the three choir windows depicts Saint Ulrich and Saint Petronella.

A painting bearing the inscription “St. Mary of Good Counsel” dates from 1782 and previously hung in the old St. Ulrich Chapel. This makes it possible to distinguish an earlier historical reference from the present church: the painting is dated 1782, while the church was consecrated in 1892. The oldest village cross also dates from 1750, placing it earlier in the chronological sequence than the consecration of the present church.

Weiler Manor originated as an original knight’s estate and was owned by the Böhling family. Together with the church and village cross, the history of the manor adds to these architectural and religious points of reference a local origin as a knight’s estate and a historical association with a family.

Historic Roads between Erftstadt and Zülpich

The Roman road from Cologne to Trier still largely survives between Erftstadt and Zülpich as a road or farm track. Its straight alignment can be traced across the terrain. Thus, in addition to its historic name, the route’s shape offers a concrete point of reference for understanding its course through the landscape.

Between Erftstadt and Zülpich, the Agrippa Road runs partly along a farm track and is still used today over long stretches. Both the form of the route and its continued use are therefore part of the picture of this historic road. Those interested in such routes will find different aspects to help them orient themselves: an alignment that can be traced across the terrain, and a route that continues to be used over much of its length.

Landscape and Places of Remembrance

The Erpa rises near Weiler in der Ebene. A landscape plan from September 2008 records wooded strips along a ditch structure north of the village. West of the village, further wooded strips follow a path. The locations of these features therefore differ by compass direction and point of reference: a ditch to the north and a path to the west.

The Jewish cemetery “Auf der Waschmaar” lies between Erp and Weiler in der Ebene. It was in use approximately from 1868 to 1914 and has a memorial stone. Its location between the two places and its approximate period of use provide a geographical and historical context for the cemetery. The memorial stone is also among the recorded features of this place of remembrance.
