Scheven can be explored through two very different themes: the church and its architectural history, and the approximately one-kilometre-long tree trail in the “Wäldchen,” which introduces 17 tree species. For hiking and cycling tours, there is another point of reference: several named routes and stages are associated with Scheven railway station.

Church and community life

The church in Scheven was planned as a chapel; today it is a single-nave Neo-Gothic branch church built of natural stone. Its features include three window bays, a ribbed vault and a triumphal arch. “Single-nave” describes the floor plan, the ribbed vault the ceiling structure, and the triumphal arch the division of the church interior.

The history of the chapel’s construction includes a shared decision by the people of Scheven: the residents unanimously voted in favour of building it and accepted the physical and financial burdens this entailed. Since 1992, the dialect Mass has been a regular part of worship in the parish. The term refers to the regional-language character of the service. The 32nd dialect Mass took place on 25 January 2025 at 7 p.m. in St. Apollinaris Church in Scheven. Thus, the tradition maintained since 1992 and a specific edition that has since taken place are both part of the story.

Tree trail and rest stop

The tree trail in Scheven’s “Wäldchen” is approximately one kilometre long and introduces 17 tree species. Its short route and botanical focus offer a different point of reference from the hiking and cycling routes associated with the railway station.

Residents call the Klausenquelle spring “Klus.” In 2025, the spot by the spring was described as a popular rest stop for hikers and cyclists. Alongside the tree trail, a named rest stop thus serves as a local point of reference for tours on foot or by bicycle.

Routes and getting here

Scheven railway station is associated with the Römerkanal hiking trail, the VIA, Tälerroute and Mechernicher 8 cycling routes, and stages 3 and 4 of the EifelBahnSteig. The two stages are named Mechernich–Scheven and Scheven–Kall. Their place names distinguish the stages; the other routes include one hiking trail and three cycling routes. Before setting out, check whether temporary diversions affect the route in question.

For hiking and cycling tours in the Kalkeifel, Scheven railway station is mentioned as an option for travelling to and from the area by train. Train connections to Euskirchen are available from Cologne and Bonn. There is an information panel at the station. The listed mobility options are train, bus and MiKE; direct train connections towards Cologne and Trier are also indicated. The station is not accessible. Check current timetables and mobility options before travelling.
