Kronenburg combines medieval lanes with views from the castle ruins over the Kyll Valley; at Kronenburger See, you can also enjoy water sports and birdwatching. The town offers a range of reasons to stay: architecture and local history, activities on the water, and routes for walking or cycling. Which focus suits you depends on whether you want to prioritize local history, observing nature or outdoor activity.

Castle Ruins and Local History

Kronenburg Castle is now only a ruin; from up there, you can enjoy views over the Kyll Valley. In the historic town center, you can stroll through narrow lanes and past medieval houses within the castle ring. St. John the Baptist Parish Church dates back to the 15th century; its noteworthy net vault is supported by a single central pillar. A net vault is characterized by a rib pattern arranged like a net.

Since 2011, the Dr. Axe Foundation has operated a farm complex called Hasenberghof above the historic town center, where animal welfare projects are carried out. It also houses an art cabinet with changing exhibitions of paintings by the DĂĽsseldorf School of Painting. The Kronenburger Kunst-Pfad invites you to follow its trail. One practical difference when choosing what to see: the church, with its vault, represents architectural history, while the art cabinet hosts changing painting exhibitions.

Water Sports and Birdwatching at the Lake

The 27-hectare Kronenburger See is a recreational lake for sailing, surfing and swimming. The sailing and water sports center offers sailing and water sports courses and instruction; various sailboats, SUPs and kayaks are also available to rent there. Courses, instruction and rentals are subject to the season and weather. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check in advance what is available for your travel dates.

On the lakeshore, between the campground and the forebay, there is a birdwatching station with a fixed observation telescope and identification boards showing the waterbird species found in the area. At the same lake, water sports and focused waterbird observation offer different ways to enjoy your visit.

Hiking and Cycling Trails

The Eifel Springs Trail is a 68-kilometer circular hiking route that runs from Kronenburg via Dahlem, Vierherrenstein, Blankenheim and Nettersheim, then via Schmidtheim back to Kronenburg. The Eifel-Blick viewpoint is on the Willibrordusweg and the local “Around Kronenburg” circular trail. The Kyll Cycle Path passes directly by Kronenburger See.

The Springs Trail is described by its total length and route; the Eifel-Blick viewpoint is linked to two trails, and the Kyll Cycle Path passes directly by the lake. This lets you choose between a circular hike, a viewpoint and a cycling route by the water.
