The Moated Castles Route passes through the municipalities of Titz and Niederzier, the town of Jülich and the municipality of Aldenhoven in the north of the Düren district. Titz is therefore part of a route that includes several municipalities in the northern part of the district.

Church, Mill and Moated Castles Route

In the town of Titz, the two lower tower levels of the late Gothic parish church of St. Cosmas and Damian have been preserved. At municipal level, the Düppelsmühle is Titz’s landmark. The post mill was once used to grind grain; in 2014, it was badly damaged by a storm and subsequently repaired. The church and mill offer different historical points of interest: the preserved tower levels on the one hand, and the mill’s former use and its repair after storm damage on the other.

Rödingen: Synagogue and Jewish Cemetery

The LVR Cultural Centre Landsynagoge Rödingen is located in Rödingen, within the municipality. It is an ensemble comprising a synagogue and the home of the Jewish Ullmann family. The synagogue was built in 1841; together with the home, it forms the only building ensemble of its kind in the western Rhineland that has been largely preserved in its original condition. The rural synagogue itself is the only one in the Rhineland to have been largely preserved in its original condition. Monthly events explore Jewish themes and include lectures and workshops. Check the centre’s calendar for specific event dates before your visit.

The Jewish cemetery lies on the edge of Rödingen and was first mentioned in 1745. It still has 15 gravestones and a plinth without a gravestone. In 1964, the gravestones were placed along the cemetery wall because their original location was no longer known. The years 1841, 1745 and 1964 mark different historical reference points: the construction of the synagogue, the cemetery’s first mention and the later placement of the gravestones.

More Destinations in the Düren Destination

The wider Düren destination offers further cultural highlights. In Jülich, the citadel is an almost completely preserved and restored fortress with a ducal palace in the style of the Italian High Renaissance. It is considered the oldest complex of its kind north of the Alps. You can explore its ramparts, bastions and casemates on your own or as part of a guided tour. Check the current opening arrangements before your trip.

For those interested in taking in the landscape as well, the Indemann is another attraction in the Düren destination. The 36-metre-high sculpture stands on the Goltsteinkuppe, which, at just under 150 metres, is the highest elevation in the municipality of Inden. Viewing platforms offer views of the Inden open-cast mine landscape; you can also walk along the sculpture’s outstretched arm.

Another regional route worth noting is the RurUfer cycle path. It runs via Monschau to Einruhr, along the Rursee through the Rureifel, past Düren and Jülich, and through the Heinsberg region to Roermond. Railway stations along the route make it possible to plan your own route and stages; some stages can therefore also be enjoyed as day trips. Before setting off, check the latest rail and bicycle carriage conditions, as well as route conditions.
