Kleinhau offers a range of options for a stay: the Hürtgenwald Memorial Chapel and the Marian shrine in Hoppenhardt, hiking routes through woodland and pastureland, and the MSC nature track at Raffelsberg.
Chapel, Marian Shrine and Peace Trail
The Hürtgenwald Memorial Chapel is in Kleinhau. It is a votive chapel, completed in 1970, and features an altar cross and a statue of the Virgin Mary. The Marian shrine in Hoppenhardt was built after the end of the Second World War. Residents of the area erected it as a sign of gratitude for surviving and as a memorial commemorating the victims and suffering of the war years. An old water bunker is located directly below the shrine.
The traditional Hürtgenwald Peace Walk took place in Kleinhau on 8 May 2026. Around 100 people took part; the route led from the chapel in Kleinhau to the Marian shrine in Hoppenhardt.
The Brunnenau Cross stands on the left side of the path from the former farmstead “Hoppenhardt” towards “Wegweiser”, just under 100 metres past the fork at the “Madonna”.
Hikes from Kleinhau
The “Hoppenhardt, Gieschhardt, Scharberg (Kleinhau/Hürtgen region)” hiking route starts in the centre of Kleinhau, at the church or the Hürtgenwald Memorial Chapel. It leads through mixed woodland, across the Rinnebach and over Hoppenhardt Hill before returning to the starting point.
The “From Kleinhau to the Wehe Valley” hiking route starts in Hürtgenwald-Kleinhau on “In der Kaule” street, near a car park in the vicinity of the kindergarten. Check local information about the car park before setting out. Along the way, the route follows the Astelbach and Hürtgenbach streams through green pastures and past horse paddocks. The Wehebachtalsperre reservoir is also within walking distance of Kleinhau.
The two hikes offer different experiences: the route over Hoppenhardt returns to its starting point in the village centre and passes through mixed woodland, across the Rinnebach and over Hoppenhardt Hill. The route to the Wehe Valley takes in two streams, green pastures and horse paddocks. The starting points also differ: the church or Memorial Chapel in the town centre, or “In der Kaule” street near the kindergarten.
Nature Track at Raffelsberg
The MSC Kleinhau has a nature track at Raffelsberg, around 1,500 metres long. It runs mostly through the valley and features numerous climbs and descents. Its approximate length alone therefore does not fully describe the route; the changes in elevation are also part of the track’s character.
During a training event, children can ride on the MSC children’s track for free, using two or three wheels. As this offer is available only during a training event and operational details may change, check the latest information on dates and participation requirements in advance.
