Gescher offers several different ways to shape your stay: themes relating to bees and beekeeping, the history of peat work, museums in the central area and in Hochmoor, as well as activities in the town park and on a bicycle. When choosing what to explore, you can consider whether you are mainly looking for museum exhibits, time outdoors or both. The range of options spans nature observation, local history and activities in the park and on cycling tours, so you can tailor your stay to your own interests.
Bees, Beekeeping and Moorland History
The Naturparkhaus Bienenmuseum introduces bees, honey and beekeeping in the past and present. Visitors can observe living bee colonies at work. This brings together the bees themselves, the product honey and the practice of beekeeping. The contrast between past and present offers a historical perspective, while observing the colonies provides a hands-on way to explore the subject.
In Gescher-Hochmoor, the D(T)orfmuseum focuses on the history of the settlement. Its account of peat work spans the early days of peat cutting through to industrial extraction. The museum also presents the former Weiße Venn, once Westphalia’s largest raised bog, with its diverse animal and plant life. In this way, settlement history, the development of peat work and a portrayal of a former moorland landscape come together.
The museums are also spread across different locations: three are in Gescher’s central area, and a fourth is in Hochmoor. Another cultural thread is Gescher’s longstanding connection with Reken, Gemen, Borken and Rhede, reflected in shared religious celebrations. Alongside the individual museum themes, this offers a look at shared traditions that bring together several named places.
Town Park and History Trail
Gescher Town Park has a climbing treehouse, slides, a water park and a skate park. These facilities offer a range of outdoor activities, from climbing and sliding to skating. The Gescher History Trail runs through the town park. The park can therefore be a destination both for its facilities and for the trail that passes through it.
Berkel Floodplain and Cycling Excursions
Parts of the Berkel floodplain are designated as an FFH nature conservation area. It is important to note that the designation applies to parts of the floodplain. If you would like to explore Gescher by bicycle, you can choose from six cycling excursions along the Berkel and the Slinge. Stadtmarketing Gescher also offers the option of renting an e-scooter or an e-tandem; confirm availability before you travel. The cycling excursions and rental vehicles offer different ways to incorporate activity into your stay.
