Vetschau is largely rural in character: agriculture and distinctive farmsteads are part of the village’s visible character. Gut Linde defines the southern entrance to the village; a mill with a long history stands on nearby Vetschauer Berg. The wider travel destination of Aachen also offers distinct nature and cultural attractions.

Farmsteads and History in Vetschau

Large farms and intact farmsteads form the agricultural backdrop to Vetschau; livestock and dairy farming are carried out there. Gut Linde is a largely enclosed three- or four-sided farmstead that flanks the southern entrance to the village. The complex is a distinctive feature of the townscape and cultural landscape. Two aspects therefore stand side by side: the agricultural use of larger farms and the individual farmstead that marks the village’s appearance.

The Vetschau Mill was built in 1798 and is located on nearby Vetschauer Berg. Alongside the farmstead form of Gut Linde, it offers another historical landmark in the rural landscape.

4 Linden in the Wider Travel Destination of Aachen

4 Linden is located in the northwest of Aachen and is surrounded by orchards, horse paddocks and hiking trails. Donkey walks with Andreas are offered there by arrangement. Options range from an introductory walk to a half-day tour over Vetschauer Berg, which opens up views of Aachen. The main difference is the time involved: an introductory walk or a half-day tour. Arrange dates directly with the farm.

The offerings at 4 Linden also include the Karlsgarten. More than a hundred plants, herbs and vegetables grow there. The garden is based on the “Capitulare de Villis,” issued by Emperor Charlemagne around 800. Garden plants and historical connections are both central here.

Aachen: City History, Art and Getting There

In the wider travel destination of Aachen, the cathedral lies in the heart of the Old Town. Charlemagne was buried there in 814; during the Middle Ages, the cathedral was the site of the coronation of German emperors until 1531. The cathedral treasury presents more than twelve centuries of sacred art that has shaped the cathedral since the time of Charlemagne. Aachen’s museums explore other themes: the Couven Museum brings to life the everyday world of Aachen’s upper-middle classes from the Rococo to the Biedermeier period. The Ludwig Forum presents international contemporary art in a former umbrella factory building. The Carolus Thermen combine modern architecture with Aachen’s centuries-old bathing culture.

For getting around Aachen: the cathedral is about a 15-minute walk from the main train station. Elisenbrunnen is also in the heart of the Old Town and is easily accessible on foot and by bus. Check current services before travelling by bus. A tall, multi-part wayside cross made of bluestone also stands on Vetschauer Weg in Aachen. It is about 2.50 m tall and undated; it probably dates from shortly before or around 1900.
