Zirkow can be explored through several distinct themes: cycling, Rügen’s village history, and artistic performances with horses. When choosing a destination for your stay, a mix of outdoor activity, architectural history, everyday culture and food production provides a useful starting point. A cycle path section around 3.8 kilometres long, St. John’s Church, the Museum Farm and the show workshops at Karls Erlebnis-Dorf each offer a different focus.

Cycle path between Zirkow and Serams

A section of the cycle path around 3.8 kilometres long between Zirkow and Serams has officially opened to traffic. As a missing link, the route is intended to make cycling on Rügen safer and more attractive for both everyday use and tourism. Its length gives you a clear reference point for planning your route; minor related works may change. Check the latest information about the section before setting off.

Church and Museum Farm: History on Rügen

The church and the Museum Farm offer two clearly distinct points of reference for architectural history. St. John’s Church in Zirkow is a brick church with a fieldstone base dating from the 15th century. The main building of the Museum Farm is a Kübbungs-Dielenhaus, a type of building typical of pre-industrial house construction on Rügen, built in 1727.

The Museum Farm displays agricultural historical equipment, old pictures and documents, as well as original household items from different periods in Rügen’s history. Visitors can see what rural village life on Rügen was like over several centuries. The different collections draw attention to various aspects of this life: equipment, pictures, documents and household objects complement one another as historical evidence. The displays may be updated over time; if you are looking for particular exhibits, check the current exhibition in advance.

Horse Theatre and Show Workshops

The Zirkow Horse Theatre offers a different kind of cultural experience from the church and museum: it develops and presents artistic performances with horses. Performances follow seasonal schedules; check the programme separately if seeing a performance is important to your trip. Karls Erlebnis-Dorf Zirkow offers another focal point. Among other things, its show workshops make jams, cast chocolate and bake bread using traditional methods. While the Museum Farm displays historical equipment and household items, the workshops focus on food production. Specific production offerings may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before your visit.

A broader look at Vorpommern-Rügen

Looking at Vorpommern-Rügen broadens the perspective beyond the attractions in Zirkow. The district of Vorpommern-Rügen includes Rügen and the offshore islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz; the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain is also part of the district. Estimates put the number of museums there at around 60. In Putbus, the gallery in the Orangery hosts up to eight exhibitions a year, as well as readings and concerts. The region’s natural and cultural heritage adds to this perspective: the beech forests in Jasmund National Park on Rügen are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe”; the old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar”.
