Karnin’s local profile ranges from an extensive Pomeranian estate complex to a small kitchen museum. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish these local highlights from the cultural and natural attractions of the wider Vorpommern-Rügen destination.
Estate History in Karnin
The former outlying estate of the Friedrichshof manor house in Karnin was built around 1910. It is part of a characteristic Pomeranian estate complex, located directly on the road from Karnin to Velgast. The ensemble, whose layout remains intact, comprises the manor house, workers’ houses, barns and the steward’s house. The different types of buildings give the estate complex its varied character: alongside the manor house, it includes residential, agricultural and administrative buildings.
Park and Local Culture
A castle pond was created when the castle in Karnin was built. The park in Karnin is still worth a stroll today. There is also a small kitchen museum. Karnin thus brings together a range of cultural history themes: the estate complex, the castle and its pond, and the museum devoted to the kitchen.
Karnin’s history also includes its former role as a visitor destination: over time, the town became a popular place for excursions, especially for city dwellers. The Amt Barth information brochure (3rd edition, August 2020) also invited visitors to the local history museum and ceramics workshop. Check in advance for current visiting options at the kitchen museum, local history museum and ceramics workshop. Each of the three places has a different focus: kitchens, local history and ceramic crafts.
Vorpommern-Rügen: The Wider Context
The wider Vorpommern-Rügen destination broadens the picture: the district has an estimated 60 museums. The old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar.” The beech forests in Jasmund National Park on Rügen are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.”
Art lovers will find that the gallery at the monastery in Ribnitz-Damgarten mainly presents contemporary regional art, as well as a permanent exhibition of prints by Lyonel Feininger. The art collection of the Vorpommern-Rügen district is also preserved, cared for and administered there. It comprises around 500 works of painting, prints, sculpture, ceramics, silk painting and textile art, dating from the late 19th century to the present.
Another exhibition venue is the gallery in the Orangery in Putbus. Located in a historic building in the heart of the city of art and culture, it hosts up to eight exhibitions a year, as well as readings and concerts. Traditionally, at the end of each year, the gallery presents works from the collection of the Rügen Cultural Foundation, which comprises more than 1,500 exhibits. Before visiting, check current visiting options and event dates.
The scale matters when choosing a travel focus: Karnin offers local estate history and museum themes, while Vorpommern-Rügen adds collections, World Heritage sites and cultural events at district level.
