In Anklam, you can combine Brick Gothic architecture and aviation history with discoveries along the Peene. When choosing your accommodation, it’s worth first weighing up what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like to explore museums and churches, or spend more time by the water? The town offers a range of options, from historical collections to tours on the Peene.

Museums: Brick Gothic architecture and aviation history

The Steintor Museum is housed in a 32-metre-high structure: the Steintor is the tallest Brick Gothic city gate in Pomerania. The museum is also the oldest in Western Pomerania between Greifswald and Szczecin. The climb leads up 111 steps to the fifth floor. The journey through the building is therefore part of the museum visit itself.

At the Otto Lilienthal Museum, aviation history goes hand in hand with hands-on activities. On display are aircraft designed by Otto Lilienthal, who made the first safe gliding flights in history in 1891. Self-developed flight simulators, including the “Lilienthal Cockpit,” give visitors a sense of what it feels like to fly. Visitors can also explore the physical properties of air through numerous hands-on experiments. If you enjoy doing more than just looking and want to try things out for yourself, you’ll find a different approach here than at the Steintor.

The Anklam coin treasure is also among the town’s historical collections. It comprises 2,579 coins as well as silver and gold jewellery and everyday objects. These include garment appliqués and pendants for guild goblets. The different types of objects give the treasure a character distinct from the aircraft at the Lilienthal Museum.

Churches and town history

St. Nicholas Church is a typical Hanseatic and council church. Construction began in 1280; it was intended for merchants, seafarers and fishermen. Since 2018, it has hosted classical concerts. If you’re interested in both church architecture and music, you can explore the building’s historical function alongside its later use. The Anklam Information Office can provide details about visits to the museums and St. Nicholas Church.

St. Mary’s Church is Anklam’s oldest sacred building; its painted decoration is considered particularly worth seeing. The former Wehrmacht prison offers a different glimpse into the town’s history: it was built between 1939 and 1940 as part of the Nazi military justice system and had capacity for 600 prisoners. The range of historical topics therefore extends from medieval church architecture to the history of the 20th century.

Explore the Peene on foot or from the water

For a walk, the riverside promenade starts at the Peenestraße/Peene footbridge and runs along the river towards Görke. There are various ways to explore the river from the water: on guided beaver tours on the Peene, visitors can experience nature from the river. If you’d rather explore independently, you can set out from Anklam and discover the Peene on your own by canoe, rowing boat or raft.

The waterway rest area in Anklam has 13 berths, a slipway, a camping facility, a playground and a service building. These facilities complement the various water activities with stopping points for people travelling on the water and a camping option. This makes it possible to treat the town’s history and a stay on the Peene as distinct focuses of your trip.

Which accommodation suits your stay?

If museums, churches and historical topics are your main priorities, you can base your search for a hotel in Anklam around them. For a stay focused more on the water, the Peene, the riverside promenade and the activities on the water offer different ways to explore. Before booking, consider which of these themes matter to your trip; that way, you can choose Anklam based on the experiences you actually plan to enjoy.
