Viereck is a municipality in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald. One of its historical milestones is its founding by immigrants from the Palatinate: Catholic settlers from the Palatinate founded Viereck, the third village they established in Western Pomerania. In 1751, the place was named Viereck in honor of the Prussian minister Adam Otto von Viereck; before that, it was called Jägersberg. The history of the name thus traces the path from an earlier designation to the present-day place name and adds to the story of its founding by settlers from the Palatinate.

Village Layout and Architectural History

Viereck’s settlement layout is apparently that of a planned green village. This refers to an arrangement in which houses enclose a central open space; the village cemetery occupies this otherwise undeveloped area. The houses dating from the village’s founding period are also among its notable sights. The village’s distinctive layout, central cemetery and buildings from the founding period thus offer different historical points of interest.

The Catholic Church

The Catholic church is considered particularly worth seeing. The furnishings of the Nativity of Mary church include an 18th-century processional cross. The church in Viereck is a brick building in the Neo-Gothic style. Before the present church was built, a simple half-timbered church served the community. Together, these architectural forms reflect different chapters in the local history of the church; the processional cross adds a specific item of church furnishing to the architecture.

The Uecker, Forest and Cemetery

Stallberg and Uhlenkrug also offer their own distinctive landscape features. Stallberg lies on the Uecker. Uhlenkrug is situated in the forest and has an old cemetery considered worth seeing. The riverside setting on one hand, and the forest and cemetery on the other, offer different ways to explore local landscapes and history.

More to Explore in Vorpommern-Greifswald

The wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald offers more to explore beyond Viereck’s local history. Its three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of the district’s area. The Ueckermünder Heide is ideal for hiking, cycling and horse riding. If you would like to add nature activities to your trip, you can choose among these options when planning your stay in the region.

The district also offers a range of options for culture enthusiasts. In Greifswald, the Pomeranian State Museum displays the Croy Tapestry of 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. The Otto Lilienthal Museum in Anklam is a technical museum dedicated to Otto Lilienthal, the aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer and humanist. The Juliett U-461, now a museum in the port of PeenemĂĽnde, can be explored on a tour. You can also book guided tours through the historic monuments landscape via the PeenemĂĽnde Historical Technical Museum. Check current visiting and booking options for your preferred date.

This makes it possible to choose a destination based on different interests: Viereck focuses on village history, settlement layout and church art, while the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald complements these themes with nature and cultural attractions elsewhere in the district.
