Altwarp offers a variety of reasons to stay: the border harbor with ferry service to Poland, the Nature Park Trail and the inland dunes. There is also a village beach in the heart of the town and several cultural and historical sights. When choosing where to stay, you can decide whether the harbor, nature or local history should be the focus of your trip.

Harbor and Ferry Service

Altwarp Harbor is the northeasternmost harbor in the Federal Republic of Germany and also a border harbor with neighboring Poland. Ferry services run between Altwarp and Nowe Warpno in Poland, and bicycles can be taken on board. If you are planning a crossing, check the schedule in advance. This lets you take the service into account when planning your trip without committing to a specific departure time.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

Altwarp is the eastern starting and ending point of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Nature Park Trail. The trail passes historic captains’ houses located near the Altwarp inland dunes. The dune ridge immediately south of Altwarp is about two kilometers long and rises to 16 meters above sea level. It is home to a stable population of otters, a special species under the Habitats Directive.

From mid-May to mid-September, a nature park ranger leads a guided hike through the Altwarp desert or inland dune landscape every Thursday at 1 p.m. The hike lasts about two and a half hours. If you are planning to join, check the current dates before your visit. This allows you to schedule the longer hike separately from other activities.

Nearby, Waldstrand Altwarp-Siedlung can be reached from the settlement via a forest path in about ten minutes. In Wacholdertal near Altwarp, the first juniper bushes are visible from the road shortly before Altwarp. Both places offer further specific impressions of the surrounding landscape.

Village Beach and Local History

The village beach is in the heart of Altwarp and has a playground; there is also a volleyball court. So, in addition to hikes, activities at the village beach are among the options you can consider when planning your day.

The town’s history is reflected in several different buildings and places holding collections. The Dutch windmill on Mühlenberg in Altwarp was in operation until 1950. The church in Altwarp is a simple brick building with a Grüneberg organ and a suspended angel. Those interested in historic buildings and their architectural details will find two distinct places to visit in town.

The Altwarp local history museum is on the first floor of the former schoolhouse at Sandweg 122. From May to October, it is open on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m., as well as by appointment. Check opening hours before your visit; if you plan to come outside Sunday hours, arrange an appointment in advance.

Altwarp in the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald travel destination

The wider district also offers nature and cycling opportunities: in the broader Vorpommern-Greifswald travel destination, the three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of the district’s area. Regional cycling routes for exploring the district include the Stettiner Haff Circular Route and the Route of North German Romanticism. The Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of the EuroVelo Route EV10, also passes through the district. This broader perspective adds regional options to your choice of location without conflating them with the offerings directly in Altwarp.
