Hofsee Lake shapes Gubkow’s appeal to visitors, with a swimming area surrounded by reeds and tall trees. The history of the former manor estate and year-round workshops in pottery, glass fusing and basket weaving add to the experience. This offers a range of themes for a stay: time by the water, crafts in the workshop and local history.

Swimming area at Hofsee Lake

Hofsee Lake in Gubkow is a bathing lake. It is surrounded by a belt of reeds and lined with tall trees; the swimming area has a sandy bottom. From the road, you can reach the swimming area by crossing a large, gently sloping meadow. Free parking is available nearby. These specific features are a useful guide when planning a visit to the water.

For the assessment period from 2022 to 2025, the bathing water quality was rated as excellent. This rating applies to the period stated. If you are planning a visit at a later date, check the current bathing water quality status.

Manor history by the lake

The former manor estate is also part of Gubkow’s cultural heritage: its park by Hofsee Lake is a protected monument. The former manor house, Gutshaus Gubkow, is also by the lake and is privately owned. Alongside the bathing lake, the former manor estate and its park offer a separate connection to local history. Those interested in historic estates will find a different way to experience Gubkow here than at the swimming area.

Year-round workshops in the workshop

The “Ceramics, Glass Fusing, Basket Weaving” workshop runs year-round sessions in pottery, glass fusing and basket weaving. Each of the three techniques has a different craft focus. If you would like to include a workshop in your stay, check the specific dates with the organiser.

Coffee, tea and vegan cake are available at the workshop. As availability may vary, it is best to ask in advance what will be on offer during your visit. This means you can plan a visit to the workshop separately from your trip to the swimming area: here, the key considerations are a suitable course date and the current availability of refreshments.

More cultural highlights in the wider Sanitz destination

The village church offers another historical and cultural highlight in the wider Sanitz destination. It was built in the 13th century and is a substantial fieldstone building with a half-timbered tower. The church houses an altar with paintings by Rudolph Suhrlandt dating from around 1800. Its architecture and furnishings reflect different periods: the church building dates from the Middle Ages, while the altar paintings were created much later.

The Old Forge in Sanitz also has a long history: it was first mentioned in documents in 1798 and is a late Baroque oak half-timbered building. Its courtyard is a protected monument. It cannot be visited directly because the building is on private property.

The wider Sanitz destination also offers a 36-kilometre circular tour for a longer excursion. It starts at Sanitz railway station and passes through Wendfeld, Reppelin, Wendorf, Neu-Wendorf, Stormsdorf, Zarnewanz, Tessin and Horst before returning to Sanitz. The distance and listed stops help you consider this circular tour as a separate outing, rather than equating it with a visit to Gubkow’s swimming area.
