The village church in Buchholz tells a clear story of construction, destruction and rebuilding; protected monuments and archaeological traces add to this picture of Ziesendorf. Another useful reference point for planning is the cycle path along the L 13 from Schwaan to the entrance to the village. You can choose between local history, concert dates and a bike ride along this route. The wider Rostock destination offers additional cultural and nature experiences.
Buchholz Village Church: Building History and Music
Buchholz Village Church in Ziesendorf is a Neo-Gothic brick building constructed between 1876 and 1878. On 1 May 1914, the church burned down to its foundations. After being rebuilt, it was consecrated in 1925. Its construction, destruction and reconsecration form a striking historical arc. In addition to church services, a variety of concerts are held at the church, mostly during the annual Buchholz Music Summer. If a concert is the reason for your trip, check the Music Summer dates for your travel period.
Protected Sites and Archaeological Traces
In Buchholz, the 1914–18 war memorial, the 1871 memorial stone and the Peace Oak are protected monuments. These protected memorial sites add further local points of reference to the architectural history of the village church. Four largely destroyed megalithic tombs are also recorded in Ziesendorf, mostly dating to the Late Neolithic. In northern Germany, they are thought to have been built between 3500 and 2800 BC; this is a time span, not an exact year.
The Rostock district’s list of monuments, dated 10 February 2021, also records an estate park in Ziesendorf with a gravestone in the park. If you plan to visit the park, check its condition in advance. The list also records a 1914–18 war memorial on Hauptstraße in Ziesendorf.
Cycle Path from Schwaan to the Village Entrance
The cycle path running alongside the L 13 state road was officially opened on 19 August 2024. The route from Schwaan to the entrance to Ziesendorf is around six kilometres long and continues to the turn-off for Am MĂĽhlenberg. This gives you both an approximate route length and a specific arrival point for planning your trip. You can include this section as a standalone cycling leg and plan the rest of your stay separately.
