Rukieten brings together local history and monuments with an art programme held on specific dates. The L 142 and two motorway junctions at different distances provide clear guidance for getting there.
Local History and Art
Rukieten was first mentioned in a document in 1306. Three named sites reflect different aspects of its history: a memorial stone to the MTS stands at Am Ausbau 5–7; a war memorial for 1914/18 is located at the Anger; and a farmhouse at Anger 3 is listed as a historic building. Together, they comprise one architectural monument and two memorials.
At KunstOffen, from 23 to 25 May 2026, sculptor Arndt Weigend exhibited sculptures made from granite, marble, sandstone and various types of wood in his open studio in Rukieten. Drawings, woodcut prints and graphic art calendars featuring Ringelnatz poems were also on display. The event brought together sculpture, graphic art and literary themes.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
Rukieten is connected to the regional road network via the L 142. The Laage junction on the BAB 19 between Rostock and Berlin is about 20 km from Rukieten. The Bad Doberan junction on the BAB 20 is about 13 km away; this connection has been in place since 2000. According to these approximate distances, Bad Doberan is closer than Laage, although the distances are for different motorways. When planning your journey, consider both the distance and whether you intend to take the BAB 19 or the BAB 20.
In the wider Rostock travel destination
With its deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, picturesque hills and extensive forests, Sternberger Seenland Nature Park is especially suited to hiking and cycling. At Wildpark-MV, visitors can explore the park independently or join guided walks, including wolf, owl and evening walks. The nature park and wildlife park therefore offer different kinds of nature experiences: hiking and cycling at the former, as well as themed guided walks at the latter.
In the wider Rostock travel destination, Schwaan Climbing and Adventure Forest offers seven courses for children, beginners and advanced climbers. A 116.5-metre-long Flying Fox zip line runs directly over the lake. Since facilities can change, it is advisable to check their current status before making specific plans.
The Wolhynian Resettlers Museum in Linstow, also in the wider Rostock travel destination, offers guided tours for groups and individuals. Using ethnographic objects, photographs and documents, the tours tell the story of the Volhynian Germans from the mid-19th century until their settlement in Mecklenburg after the Second World War.
Buses and trains in the Rostock district operate as part of a transport association; with a single ticket, holidaymakers can travel throughout the region, including the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock. The historic Molli narrow-gauge railway runs between KĂĽhlungsborn and Bad Doberan and is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic coast. Its rare 900 mm gauge has shaped the towns on the Baltic coast since 1886.
