Alt Bukow brings together two distinct themes: the village church, with its architectural history and artistic details, and trails that offer different time commitments as circular walks or sections of longer routes. This makes it easy to tailor your visit to a specific focus: the architecture and art in the village, a walk of about two or three hours, or a section of long-distance trails. Information about the circular trails helps with planning your time; for the E9, the route and character of the trail are important distinguishing features.

Alt Bukow Village Church: Architectural History and Features

Alt Bukow Village Church is a single-nave brick church, built in the 15th century incorporating older structural elements. Single-nave describes a layout with one nave. The square west tower is as wide as the nave. The choir features a window by Lothar Mannewitz on the theme of “Resurrection.” The church also has a Friese organ, which underwent a major overhaul and partial restoration in 2000–2001. Several aspects come together here: the architectural form, older structural elements, a window with a religious theme and the history of the instrument. Those interested in architecture and art will find specific features here that can be considered separately, rather than relying on a single construction date for reference.

Sculpture Stop and Circular Trails

The “Woman with a Flower” stop on the Sculpture Trail at Salzhaff is also precisely located: it stands in the church parish meadow, opposite the church and cemetery. This creates a clear spatial connection between the church grounds and the sculpture trail, while the artwork remains a distinct feature alongside the historic architecture.

The two circular trails can be compared directly when planning your time. Circular Trail 4 runs from Alt Bukow via Friedrichsdorf and Niendorf and back to Alt Bukow. It is 7.6 kilometres long and takes about two hours on foot. Circular Trail 5 runs from Alt Bukow via Lischow and Vogelsang and back, covering 11.4 kilometres, with a walking time of about three hours. These times are approximate; as a guide, they differ by about an hour. The routes also differ in their intermediate stops: Friedrichsdorf and Niendorf are on Circular Trail 4, while Lischow and Vogelsang are on Circular Trail 5. This makes it easy to choose based on the time available and the route you would like to take.

E9 and Via Baltica

The E9 Baltic Sea Coast Trail from Neuburg to Rerik includes a section between Neuburg and Alt Bukow. This part passes through shady avenues between wide-open fields on pleasant paths. Unlike the circular trails, which return to Alt Bukow, the E9 here is a section of a route from Neuburg to Rerik. Check current trail markers and conditions before setting out, as both can change.

Alt Bukow is also part of the original Via Baltica pilgrimage route. This route perspective complements the circular trails and the E9 with pilgrimage as an additional theme. If the Via Baltica is part of your plans, check its current trail markers separately.
