Gressow can be explored from two perspectives: its church and other heritage features tell the story of local and regional history, while Lake Tressow and Jassewitzer Busch highlight the natural surroundings. Some features are in the village, while others are explicitly in the surrounding area. This distinction is useful when planning a trip: you can combine culture in the village with nature experiences nearby. If you are considering an overnight stay in Gressow, you can first decide whether church history and historic sites or trails and landscapes should be the focus.

The Church and Reformation History

In its present form, the church in Gressow is a typical brick church dating from the mid-14th century. Its Baroque altar was created by J. F. Wilde and made in 1718. This brings together two clearly distinct periods of art and architectural history in a single building: the church’s medieval form and the altar’s Baroque furnishings. Tisa v. d. Schulenburg also designed a memorial at Gressow Church. The architecture, furnishings and memorial offer distinct ways to explore the village’s history. Another regional connection dates back to the Reformation: Thomas Aderpul was the first Lutheran preacher in Klützer Winkel at that time. This connection broadens the focus from the church and architectural history to regional religious history. The cemetery is located directly around the church. A bench invites visitors to linger there with a view of Lake Tressow, linking the church’s immediate surroundings with a direct view of the landscape.

Other Heritage Features

Gressow’s heritage sites include the manor house at Dorfanger 3–4 and its park, as well as the poplar avenue near Käselow and Beidendorf. The manor house and park form a built complex; the poplar avenue provides a contrasting landscape feature. Another historic feature is the half-mile marker at the entrance to Gressow in the direction of Wismar. It is on the eastern side of the old B-105 road alignment, at kilometer 134.84. Its position on the former route makes it a different type of heritage feature from the manor house, park and avenue: it represents historic road infrastructure. The cultural heritage therefore ranges from church architecture to a manor house and park, as well as a historic road marker.

Nature and Activities in the Surrounding Area

Jassewitzer Busch lies near Gressow. This coppiced hornbeam forest is 200 to 250 years old and one of the last remnants of this historic form of woodland management in Germany. The forest thus brings together landscape and land-use history. Around Lake Tressow, unpaved hiking, horse-riding and cycling trails cross an area designated for local recreation. The lake and the surrounding wet meadows are part of the “Jameler Wald, Tressower See und Moorsee” FFH site (DE 2133-302). You can choose different ways to enjoy nature: the trails are for walking, horse riding or cycling, while the protected area gives the lake and wet meadows their landscape context. Hiking, horse riding and cycling offer different ways to experience the surroundings, without having to combine them into a single activity.

Plan Your Stay

Distinguishing between the historical features in the village and the natural attractions nearby can help you choose what to focus on. If you are planning an overnight stay in Gressow, when looking for a hotel or other accommodation, you can first consider whether you want to explore cultural history, spend time on the hiking, horse-riding or cycling trails, or combine both interests.
