Lüdersdorf (Meckl) railway station has bicycle parking and parking spaces—a specific point of reference for planning your arrival. Check these facilities before your trip. The municipality of Lüdersdorf also has an entrance to the A 20 motorway. When choosing accommodation, it is worth distinguishing the village of Lüdersdorf from other destinations in the municipality: Palinger Heide, Herrnburg, Duvennest and Boitin-Resdorf each offer their own nature and history themes. Choose your location based on which of these themes you would like to focus on.

Nature in Palinger Heide

Palinger Heide is in the municipality of Lüdersdorf and is part of the “Palinger Heide and Teschow Peninsula” landscape conservation area, as well as the protected landscape area of the Green Belt. Sandy soils and inland dunes shape the heath; it is mostly wooded and includes marshes and lakes. These include Möwenmoor in the southwest, Hoppenmoor in the northwest and Kiebitzmoor. These names provide specific points of reference within the landscape, while the woods, dunes and bodies of water describe its different features.

Decades of restricted access during the restricted-zone period allowed flora and fauna untouched by humans to thrive in Palinger Heide. The heath was designated a nature reserve in 1992. Today, many kilometres of cycle paths and hiking trails offer different ways to explore the landscape. Small, hidden woodland lakes invite visitors to swim in summer. For planning purposes, cycling, hiking and seasonal swimming are different options that do not have to be combined into a set route.

Another landscape area in the municipality is Duvennester Moor. It forms an isolated part of the “Herrnburger Binnendüne and Duvennester Moor” FFH site and lies in a wooded area south of Herrnburg. Together with the dunes, lakes and marshes of Palinger Heide, it shows that the nature destinations in the municipality are not limited to a single type of landscape.

Church and History in Herrnburg

Herrnburg is home to a single-nave village church in the Brick Gothic style. Its oldest part is a square chancel with three east windows, dating from the mid-13th century. The church was first documented in 1319. Visits can be arranged with the parish. This makes it possible to combine an interest in the building’s history with a look at its furnishings, without assuming that spontaneous visits are possible.

The church contains various works from several centuries. The Marian altar comes from Lübeck’s Burgkirche and is the work of a Lübeck master. A bronze baptismal font from the 15th century features late Gothic ornamentation and rests on three lion’s feet. The organ was made by organ builder Friedrich Albert Mehmel; in 1884, it was brought into the church together with the gallery and pews. The pulpit, dating from 1675, is in the so-called auricular style and was made by Lübeck master G. Fick. A whale rib in the nave also commemorates the men who went to sea to hunt whales. The architecture, craftsmanship and maritime memorial therefore tell different parts of the church’s history.

The Old Customs House stands directly beside the village church. It is the oldest surviving residential building in the Mecklenburg border village next to the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. The present building was erected in 1783 on the foundations of the former chapel as a two-storey half-timbered house and was initially used as a chapel again. Its construction history links the site beside the church with its former use as a religious building.

Historical Traces in Other Parts of the Municipality

There are also notable historical connections beyond Herrnburg. Duvennest lies on the former Lübeck–Gadebusch freight route. Until 1989, Palingen was part of the restricted zone and the site of a border company. Boitin-Resdorf was mentioned in 1257 as “Rastorpe” and is a compact circular village on the Lübeck–Rehna highway. The local history is reflected here in different ways: as a former trade connection, as the history of the restricted-zone period and as a traditional settlement form. When planning your stay, choose destinations according to your interests and bear in mind that they are in different locations within the municipality.
