When deciding whether to visit Blowatz, you can place different emphasis on culture, crafts and outdoor activities. A notable cultural highlight is the Paul Schmidt organ in Dreveskirchen village church: it was built in 1754 and restored between 1999 and 2001. Other options include felt-making, learning about the history of the Blowatz Riding and Driving Club, and exploring cycling and hiking routes, each with its own course.

Dreveskirchen village church and the Paul Schmidt organ

The Evangelical Lutheran village church is a listed brick building dating from the second half of the 13th century. It illustrates the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. Its furnishings also bring together different historical elements, including Baroque fixtures, a Late Gothic triumphal cross group and medieval wall paintings. The architecture and interior therefore offer several points of interest for a visit, without reducing the church to a single feature.

Paul Schmidt’s organ is the oldest surviving Paul Schmidt organ in Mecklenburg. The restored instrument can be heard at concerts during the annual Dreveskirchen Music Summer. In July and August, the Evangelical church is open daily from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.; visits can also be arranged in advance. If you are planning a visit, check the seasonal opening hours and find out about concert dates in good time.

Felt-making and equestrian sports

In Martina Weiß’s garden, visitors can felt their own ribbons, and a felting table is also available for trying the craft. These offer two ways to get hands-on experience with felt-making. In a round wooden pavilion, Martina Weiß displays felt-and-silk clothing, caps, backpacks and felt seat cushions. This makes it possible to distinguish between trying the craft yourself and viewing finished pieces.

The Blowatz Riding and Driving Club has been holding riding tournaments for many years. The municipality gradually developed its tournament grounds into a competition venue with support from the LPG. The grounds include a thatched-roof judges’ tower. Alongside the tournament history, the club’s leisure riders meet for group rides. The club’s history thus links the venue and its development with another form of riding.

Cycling and hiking routes

The Baltic Coast Cycle Route reaches Blowatz after passing the houses of Wodorf. Here, it runs on a dedicated cycle path alongside the L12 country road. Another cycling and hiking route runs from Groß Strömkendorf along the Breitling, via Damekow and Dreveskirchen, towards Stove-Boiensdorf. For orientation, the distinction is that the Baltic Coast Cycle Route reaches Blowatz, while the other route is described by its sequence of places and its direction towards Stove-Boiensdorf.

Cultural history in the region

Regional attractions around Blowatz include a thatched-roof painter’s house in Wodorf and the place where Mecklenburg painter Carl Hinrichs worked, in Heidekaten. The two places represent different cultural points of interest: the painter’s house on the one hand, and the place where Hinrichs worked on the other.

The Wismar Bay offers another historical perspective. About 1,200 years ago, a large seaport existed west of Groß Strömkendorf; it is known as Old Rerik. The approximate date and its location on Wismar Bay give this topic its own context. Together with the village church, the club’s history and the region’s cultural sites, it offers a varied view of the past and present, while the routes mentioned provide separate guidance for activities on foot or by bike.
