Boltenhagen offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: enjoy views of the beach and Baltic Sea from the pier, attend events in the spa park, or explore the cliffs and their geological features. Choosing a focus in advance can help you make the most of what’s on offer—from a stroll to an early excursion on a fishing boat. That way, you don’t have to fit every activity into the same day’s itinerary.
Pier and Beach
The Baltic seaside resort’s pier is 290 metres long, was inaugurated in 1992 and is accessible to people with disabilities. A walk along it offers views of the white sandy beach, the town and the Baltic Sea. If you want to make the coast and its views a focus of your stay, this is a great option. Public beach volleyball nets are available on Boltenhagen beach. As beach facilities may change seasonally, check what is currently available before your visit, especially if you plan to use them.
Spa Park and Architecture
The spa park hosts events for all ages throughout the year. These include children’s activities, spa concerts, silent discos and party evenings. Dates may change, so check the event schedule in advance if you want to attend a particular event. The park’s design also has its own distinctive features: covered walkways, a concert pavilion, a 500-metre-long boxwood hedge, white wooden benches and the drinking cure hall.
The tourist information office and spa library are located on the ground floor of the spa house. The Protestant Church of St Paul’s Hill offers another cultural highlight: this rectangular brick building is neo-Gothic and was inaugurated in 1873. Together with the historic spa architecture that characterises Boltenhagen, it offers a glimpse into different aspects of the town’s history and architecture.
Cliffs, Outdoor Activities and Fishing
The cliffs rise to a height of 35 metres and are classified as a glacial debris coast. With a little luck, hikers may discover fossils at the foot of the cliffs. The Activity Park offers a different kind of outdoor recreation: it is an exercise trail along the forest promenade, where you can try out the fitness equipment as you walk around. This puts geological features and outdoor exercise at the heart of two different kinds of experience.
The fishing harbour is also part of the local character: a small fleet of fishing boats supplies Boltenhagen with fresh fish. The fishing trip aboard the Uschi starts in Tarnewitz at Weiße Wiek, begins at around 6 a.m. and lasts approximately three hours. It offers an insight into the traditional craft of coastal fishing; you can also take the helm yourself. As information from the operator and availability may change, confirm the date and details with the provider in advance.
The Nordwestmecklenburg Region
For a broader geographical perspective, it is worth looking at Nordwestmecklenburg. In the north of the district lies the “Nordwestmecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” landscape area, while the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” is in the south. The landscape of Nordwestmecklenburg is shaped by terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, stretches of steep and flat coastline, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. This describes the district as a whole; to experience Boltenhagen itself, explore the cliffs, beach and Baltic Sea.
Planning Your Stay
When looking for a hotel in Boltenhagen, your preferred focus is a good place to start: would you like to plan an early fishing trip, or would you rather set aside time for the beach, the spa park and historic architecture? The approximate start time and duration of the trip give you a specific timeframe to work with. If you want to combine several interests, it helps to prioritise the experiences you’re looking for rather than cramming every activity into a single day.
