Warnow is located in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. When choosing a place to stay, you’ll find nature around Santower Lake, cycling and hiking trails, and village and architectural history side by side. The municipality lies entirely within the Northwest Mecklenburg Hills Landscape Protection Area; Santower Lake is located immediately beside Warnow, within the municipality. In Bössow, the village church and old farmhouses form another cultural focal point.
Santower Lake and the Landscape
Santower Lake is a shallow, protected lake with important habitats for plants and animals. Reed beds and wet meadows provide habitats for many species; its shores are protected as a nature reserve. Autumn brings a clear seasonal highlight: many thousands of geese of various species use the lake as a roost. The exact number varies.
There are hiking routes of varying lengths around Warnow and Santower Lake. The different route lengths offer flexibility when planning your time. Check local trail conditions and access before setting out. This makes it easy to fit walks into your trip while keeping in mind that the lake’s shores are a protected natural area.
Cycle Paths and Route Choices
The municipality recommends a cycle tour from Grevesmühlen via Warnow and Bössow to the Baltic Sea at Wohlenberger Wiek. For a different route, the Castles and Manor Houses Route passes through Bössow, Thorstorf and Warnow and connects to the Baltic Sea Cycle Route. It runs through the Mecklenburg countryside, with rolling fields and meadows. The municipality’s rural road network is also considered suitable for cycling.
The two route descriptions focus on different things: the municipality’s recommendation covers the route from Grevesmühlen to Wohlenberger Wiek, while the Castles and Manor Houses Route passes through several villages and connects to the Baltic Sea Cycle Route. Which one better suits your plans depends on which of these stated connections you would like to use. Check the signposting and conditions locally before setting off.
Village and Architectural History in Bössow
Bössow is known as a farming village with several well-preserved old farmhouses and a small village church. Bössow Village Church was built in the first half of the 14th century as a late-medieval brick church. Its low, square west tower is a distinctive feature of the building.
The church’s furnishings also bring together details from different periods. The east window contains stained glass from the late 14th century, depicting the Adoration of the Magi as well as several apostles and saints. The pulpit dates from 1674; the altarpiece is Neo-Gothic. The building’s form, stained glass and furnishings therefore offer several specific clues for understanding the village’s architectural history.
Großenhof Castle is described as an old, listed half-timbered building and is associated with several holiday bungalows. Großenhof and Gantenbeck are considered locations for gentle tourism because of their proximity to the Baltic Sea and the beauty of the surrounding landscape. These local features add another perspective on Warnow and its surroundings to the themes of the lake and village church.
