Coast, Bodden lagoons and woodland landscapes

North Western Pomerania is defined by a variety of very different landscapes. The region’s coast includes the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, with steep and gently sloping shores, windflats and highly indented Bodden lagoon coasts shaped by peninsulas, spits and islands. The North Western Pomeranian woodland landscape also stretches between Marlow and Stralsund. Middle spotted woodpeckers and red-breasted flycatchers breed in its deciduous forests; the white-tailed eagle also breeds there, a special feature of the area. Nature here ranges from coastal formations to the birdlife of the woodland landscape.

Well-known nature reserves in North Western Pomerania include Ahrenshooper Holz, Ribnitzer GroĂźes Moor, Kormorankolonie Niederhof, Unteres Recknitztal, Grenztalmoor, and Borgwallsee and PĂĽtter See. Their names reflect the wide range of protected areas in the region.

Birdlife at Richtenberg Lake

The restored Richtenberg Lake lies between Franzburg and Richtenberg and is a nature reserve. Various waterbirds breed, rest and overwinter there. Several observation points offer views of the renaturation project. The three distinct phases of the birdlife provide seasonal perspectives on the lake, while the observation points also draw attention to the restoration of the landscape.

Palace parks and historic gardens

The neo-Gothic palace in Schlemmin is set within a landscape park covering more than 18 hectares. Follow a circular trail to admire trees more than 500 years old: oaks, large beeches, black locusts and larches. The palace, park and mature trees give this place a different character from the open coastal and lake landscapes.

At the 1796 manor house in Alt Guthendorf, architectural and garden history come together: the listed, lovingly restored house is surrounded by a manor park with very old apple and pear trees, some of which are varieties of unknown origin. You can discover more about garden culture in the naturalistic garden at the Alt Guthendorf estate. It features pollinator-friendly flower meadows, herb beds and nesting opportunities.

Bad SĂĽlze also offers a range of things to discover. The listed spa park invites you to stroll among the trees and visit the nearby salt meadows. The Mecklenburg Salt Museum has been housed since 1971 in the former administrative building of the Grand Ducal saltworks, the Old Salt Office. The half-timbered building dates from 1759 and adds an insight into the history of the saltworks to your visit to the park.

Gardens and regional experiences

Since 2016, the annual Treckeltied, organised by the AG Gartenpfad Nordvorpommern of the LAG Nordvorpommern e. V. association, has led visitors through the autumn gardens and parks along the North Western Pomeranian Garden Trail. Over an autumn weekend, you can explore the various sites by bicycle, car or on foot. As part of the 2026 Treckeltied programme, ADFC is offering free guided cycling tours past selected gardens in North Western Pomerania. If you plan a tour, check the specific event dates in advance.

The Ostseemühle Langenhanshagen offers another way to discover regional produce: on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., visitors can watch oil being pressed and sample various oils and flours. Since these hours are important for planning your trip, it’s a good idea to check them before your visit.

Whether you’re interested in coastal formations, birdlife at Richtenberg Lake, old trees or gardens, these varied highlights make it easy to explore North Western Pomerania according to your interests.
