Neubrandenburg is located on Lake Tollensesee in the Mecklenburg Lake District. The destination combines routes in and around the city with a distinctive history of architecture and art. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the longer routes by the lake and the buildings and exhibitions in the city. This will help you decide whether to set aside more time for outdoor activities, lakeside scenery or culture.

Between the lakeshore, hiking trail and cycling route

There are opportunities for hiking and cycling at Lake Tollensesee near Neubrandenburg. The 40-kilometre GRÜNE RUNDE connects the city’s recreational areas and leads through countryside and nature close to the city. Another route option is the 37-kilometre circular trail around Lake Tollensesee: it offers scenic views, but also includes strenuous climbs through the Mecklenburg Ice Age landscape. When choosing, you can therefore consider both the focus of each route and their different lengths.

Cyclists will also find dedicated route options: Neubrandenburg is an important stop on the Elbe-Oderhaff Cycle Route from Lüneburg to the Baltic Sea. The Geopark’s Ice Age Route, “Mecklenburg Ice Age Landscape,” also runs through the city and is laid out with cross-connections along its axis. Boats and bicycles can be rented on the north shore of Lake Tollensesee, at the end of the Kulturpark. It is best to check current rental options before making specific plans.

Augustabad on Lake Tollensesee offers another focus: it has the longest beach in Neubrandenburg, a bathing island and plenty of space for families to play. So, alongside longer routes, you can also add a beach and space for play to your itinerary if you would like to spend your time by the lake differently.

City wall, Brick Gothic architecture and theatre

Neubrandenburg’s almost completely preserved city wall, about 2.3 kilometres long, includes four magnificent city gates, Wiek houses and the Mönchenturm tower.

In the tower area of St. Mary’s Church, the oldest surviving part of the building, the permanent exhibition “Paths to Brick Gothic – In Neubrandenburg for Defence and Decoration” explores Brick Gothic architecture. Access for visitors may vary depending on events and rehearsals. So check in advance which visiting options are available on your chosen date. The Schauspielhaus, the oldest surviving theatre in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is also located on Pfaffenstraße.

Discover art and local history

The Neubrandenburg Art Collection is housed in a renovated Baroque building in the city centre. It displays contemporary art as well as porcelain from the part of the city’s 1890–1945 art collection that was rediscovered in 2006. Changing special exhibitions complement the programme. Those interested in different art forms will therefore find a glimpse of the porcelain collection alongside contemporary works.

The former Franciscan monastery is associated with St. John’s Church, where the local history exhibition is located. For another way to find your bearings, the virtual city tour features 15 locations with QR-code markers and storytelling shop windows that invite visitors to explore. Neubrandenburg Tourist Information arranges tour guides and city tours. This gives you the choice between exploring independently with the virtual tour and joining a guided tour.
