Schönbeck comes into focus through its specific local stories: the Mühlenbach flows through the village, was put into a culvert in the early 1970s and later renaturalised. The village church is an Early Gothic rectangular building dating from the second half of the 13th century. In Rattey, the manor house, landscaped park, viticulture and farm shop add further points of interest within the municipality. For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish clearly between what is in Schönbeck itself, what belongs to Rattey within the municipality, and what is part of the wider Mecklenburg Lake District.

Water and the Village Landscape

The Mühlenbach runs through Schönbeck’s history as a local landmark: it was put into a culvert in the early 1970s and later renaturalised. Two artesian wells add to the area’s water features. One is by the former rectory; the other is about 800 metres to the northwest.

Village Church and Organ History

Schönbeck Village Church is an Early Gothic rectangular building dating from the second half of the 13th century. The village church’s organ, rebuilt in 2005, was donated by Wilhelm Sauer in 1910 as his final work in his birthplace of Schönbeck. A commemorative plaque near the church marks the site of Sauer’s birthplace. Sauer was born in Schönbeck on 23 March 1831 and lived there until 1838. The village church thus brings together architectural history and episodes from Sauer’s life. Rattey Church has an organ by Carl August Buchholz, dating from 1836, with seven stops on one manual and pedal. The two organ histories differ in their locations and the people associated with them: Wilhelm Sauer is central in Schönbeck, while Carl August Buchholz is associated with Rattey.

Rattey: Manor House, Viticulture and Farm Shop

The manor house in Rattey was built in 1806 by Hans-Christoph von Oertzen; the landscaped park was created around the same time. Grapes are grown in the park, and the area is described as Germany’s northernmost wine-growing region. At Rattey Castle, the “Alte Kellerei” farm shop invites visitors to sample, shop and linger. It offers wines, liqueurs and spirits from Rattey, as well as “Brohmer Landbräu” beers. As opening arrangements may change, check in advance when the farm shop is open if you plan to visit.

Landscape and Routes

Schönbeck is nestled in the landscape of the Brohmer and Helpter Hills. Eichhorst Nature Reserve lies in Schönbecker Wald, in the southwestern part of the municipality of Schönbeck. A 40-kilometre circular route through the Helpter Hills is suitable for cyclists and passes through Schönbeck as both its first and last stop. Check current route conditions before setting off. To reach the Brohmer Hills, the B 96 runs from the Woldegk exit via Schönbeck, Brohm and Friedland.

The Mecklenburg Lake District as a Regional Setting

The wider Mecklenburg Lake District offers a distinct regional perspective. Müritz National Park is part of this region and is characterised by forests, moors, lakes and expansive meadows. The Müritz National Park Trail explores the park’s landscape types and special features over nine stages: it follows lake shores, passes through ancient forests and by inland dunes, and reaches the source of the Havel. The two route options address different planning needs: a 40-kilometre circular route suitable for cyclists, with Schönbeck as its first and last stop, or a nine-stage hiking trail in Müritz National Park.
