A 15th-century bell, a mural at the sawmill and a Baumkuchen cake linked to Ivenack give Grammentin distinct cultural and culinary highlights.

Village Church and Art in Grammentin

Grammentin village church has a bell dating from the 15th century. A notice dated 26 July 2024 reported the completion of the extensive renovation, during which the historic fabric was preserved. The bell and renovation offer two concrete points of reference for the building’s history.

A mural created by GĂĽnter Horn and other artists is located at the local sawmill. In 2016, it was described as the largest mural in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The art courtyard is also associated with art from Grammentin: the painter and graphic artist GĂĽnter Horn, who lives there, is associated with the art courtyard and is considered the last student of Nagel.

Baumkuchen and Fairy-Tale Garden

The Komander family confectionery sells its patented Baumkuchen exclusively at its shop in Grammentin. Its inspiration comes from the 1,000-year-old oak trees in Ivenack. The “Ivenacker Baumkuchen,” which Peter Komander created as a special baked delicacy, is also associated with the confectionery. The links to Ivenack are therefore part of the product’s history, while the patented Baumkuchen is sold exclusively in Grammentin.

Visitors can stroll around the Fairy-Tale Garden with a glass of wine and enjoy the plants and diverse wildlife. The Fairy-Tale Garden Brasserie serves Italian cuisine. Its leafy terrace overlooks the sunset behind Lake Kummerow. If you are planning a visit, check current visitor arrangements in advance.

Routes and Other Destinations in the Mecklenburg Lake District

The Vorpommern-MĂĽritz Route leads towards Grammentin. On the village road, turn right towards Grammentin. Check route conditions in advance if you plan to follow this route description.

The Mecklenburg Lake District also offers its own nature and cultural experiences. MĂĽritz National Park is part of this region and is characterised by forests, moors, lakes and vast meadows. Its hiking trail covers different landscape types and features over nine stages: it runs alongside lakes, through ancient forests, past inland dunes and to the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours there, including guided visits to the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water.

Visitors can observe animals at the Damerower Werder bison reserve. The reserve lies on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin, in the Mecklenburg Lake District and in Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. A forest adventure trail complements wildlife watching with climbing opportunities, an anthill house, an exhibition with touch-and-see panels, and a dendrophone. Alongside hiking trails, the region therefore also offers a nature trail with various stations.

For waterway travellers, Neustrelitz town harbour offers another regional starting point: from there, they can explore MĂĽritz National Park and the Strelitz Small Lakes region via the Upper Havel Waterway.
