The small medieval bronze bell in the roof turret of St. Anne’s Chapel rings on church occasions. Together with the half-timbered building, its elevated position on the B 195 and the surrounding stone wall, it brings Gallin’s local and cultural history to life. A cycling and hiking trail also connects the sculpture park in Gallin with Hof Gallin; Gut Gallin represents the agricultural side of the village.

St. Anne’s Chapel: Building and furnishings

St. Anne’s Chapel is a half-timbered building with a flat interior ceiling and was built in 1687. Its choir has an octagonal end. In Gallin, it stands right beside the B 195, slightly elevated and surrounded by a stone wall. This makes it possible to consider the building’s form and location separately: the half-timbering, ceiling and choir end characterize the building, while the road, elevated position and wall define its place in the village.

Inside are an altar decorated with wood carvings and bearing the Wedemhof coat of arms, a Baroque altar, and a simple wooden pulpit from the late Renaissance. The altarpiece depicts the Crucifixion of Jesus. The interior was restored during renovation work in 1998/99; it has the feel of a rustic farmhouse parlour where visitors can linger.

A boarded roof turret with a shingle roof rises above the west gable. It houses the small medieval bronze bell, which rings on church occasions. According to local tradition, Tsar Peter the Great attended a church service in the small chapel around the turn of the year 1712/1713. Old farmhouses in Gallin are also among the region’s sights, adding traditional rural architecture to the local cultural heritage.

The route between the sculpture park and Hof Gallin

The cycling and hiking trail connects the sculpture park in Gallin with Hof Gallin. It has a water-bound base and surface layer; old varieties of fruit trees have been planted along the route. The route and its design are related, but they are distinct details: the trail links two specific destinations, while the water-bound surface and fruit trees characterize its construction. In addition to the chapel, Gallin therefore offers a clearly defined destination for cycling and hiking.

Agriculture and farm offerings

Gut Gallin is an agricultural business in the Schaalsee UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It farms a contiguous area of 1,000 hectares of arable land and grassland. The farm has practised organic farming since 1991; Gut Gallin is a member of Bioland and BUND and bears the “Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve” regional label. The farm’s agricultural land use and its organic approach are thus presented side by side.

Gut Gallin includes an organic butcher’s shop, a farm shop and a farmhouse parlour. In addition to meat and sausage, the farm shop offers seasonal vegetables, salads and tomatoes from the organic farm. The operator reported that the farm shop was temporarily closed; check whether it has reopened before visiting. These seasonal products differ from the farm’s year-round agricultural operations: vegetables, salads and tomatoes are explicitly seasonal offerings.

Culture in the wider travel destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim

Ludwigslust Palace is part of the wider travel destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim. It was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg and, together with the park and town, forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The palace is also the centrepiece of an almost completely preserved late Baroque town complex with a former court church and an English-style landscaped park. The palace presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries. This regional cultural history complements the topics relating to Gallin without attributing the palace, town complex or park to Gallin.
