Zülow lies right on the edge of the Grambow Moor and is considered an old manor village. This offers two different perspectives for a stay: the village structure shaped by history and the moorland, with its nature trail, circular route, lake and floating mats. You can plan village history and nature as separate focal points while getting to know the distinctive features of the village and its surroundings.

Moorland and walking routes

The Grambow Moor lies southwest of Schwerin, between Grambow, Wittenförden, Zülow and Stralendorf. It is considered the second-largest raised bog in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A walk along the nature trail takes you through the moor forest; the trail leads to the Großer Moorsee and the moor’s floating mats.

A circular route is another way to explore the moor on foot. Both the circular route and the nature trail can be walked from Grambow. Check local conditions before setting out. When planning, bear in mind that Grambow is the starting point for these routes, while Zülow is considered a starting point for cycling tours into the Grambow Moor.

Manor-village character and village landscape

The village landscape includes an old manor estate, a square reminiscent of a village green, and large village gardens. The layout of the streets and buildings also reflects the village’s historical manor origins. These different elements give the village its distinctly rural character: its history can be seen both in the layout of the village and in individual features of its surroundings.

Zülow is considered a village that has retained its rural character despite its manor past and the collectivization of agriculture after the war. A lime-tree avenue leads into Zülow and is protected as a natural monument. It adds another striking landscape feature to the village.

The manor house is considered to have been restored; the manor house and park are privately owned. If you are considering a visit, please check access in advance rather than assuming that the site is open to the public.

Water, exhibition and history

The Ottergraben flows from the Grambow Moor through Zülow. Its water is clear, yet tinted brown by the moor. The watercourse adds a feature to the moorland that runs directly through the village.

At Gut Grambow, a permanent exhibition covers the flora and fauna of the Grambow Moor, the history of peat extraction and planned restoration. This brings the moor’s natural environment and history of human use into focus together. Check whether the exhibition is available before your visit.

Archaeological traces are also part of the regional context: large megalithic tombs lie between Zülow and nearby Stralendorf. They provide another historical point of reference alongside Zülow’s manor-village history and the topics covered by the exhibition at Gut Grambow.
