A look at Ziegendorf reveals several distinct themes. The village church organ and the Old Rectory are part of the town; art in Pampin and animal experiences in Platschow broaden the picture of the municipality. The foothills of the Ruhner Berge lie nearby. The range of themes therefore extends from church and local history to contemporary art, performances and landscape.
Village Church and Old Rectory
The organ in Ziegendorf village church was built by Marcus Runge in 1925. It was rededicated at a festive church service on May 26, 2013; it can be seen and heard at church services, baptisms and weddings. The year it was built and its rededication mark two milestones in its history. These occasions also place the instrument within both religious and festive life.
The Old Rectory in Ziegendorf was completely renovated in 2016 and is run by the Neues Landleben association. It is a multi-purpose building for residents of Ziegendorf, neighboring municipalities and visitors. Its user groups thus extend beyond the town’s residents. This distinguishes its function from that of the village church organ as a historic instrument: the rectory’s use by multiple groups is its main focus.
Art in Pampin
Pampin is a locality within the municipality of Ziegendorf. The kulturforum there displays paintings, graphics, photographic art and sculptures on a permanent and temporary basis. The program therefore includes both permanently displayed works and changing exhibitions; individual exhibitions may change. If you are interested in a particular exhibition theme, check what is currently on display before your visit.
The Pampin Sculpture Park opened in 2007 and features more than 70 sculptures and installations by renowned artists of contemporary three-dimensional art. The kulturforum and the park have different focuses: alongside paintings, graphics and photographic art, the park centers on sculptures and installations. The art on offer in Pampin thus encompasses several media as well as a collection of contemporary three-dimensional works.
Visitor Experiences in Platschow
In Platschow, also a locality within the municipality of Ziegendorf, visitors may feed almost all the animals at the Elephant Farm. Performances take place several times a day and are included in the admission price. Advance registration is required for a special experience. The visitor offerings therefore have different conditions: feeding is possible for almost all the animals, performances are included in the admission price, and the special experience requires registration. Check the current schedule and performance times before your visit, as exact schedules may vary.
Landscape and the Wider Region
The foothills of the Ruhner Berge are near Ziegendorf and add a landscape dimension alongside its cultural and animal-related themes.
The wider Ludwigslust-Parchim travel region offers further cultural and historical themes. Ludwigslust Palace was the former residence of the Mecklenburg dukes and, together with its park and town, forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The palace also forms the centerpiece of an almost entirely preserved late Baroque town layout, with a former court church and an English-style landscaped park.
The Dömitz Citadel offers a different architectural perspective. The Renaissance fortress was laid out as a pentagon based on Italian models and includes bastions, casemates and a drawbridge. The palace ensemble and the fortress offer two different perspectives on architectural history in the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim travel region.
