Two village centres and a single access point define Balow as a Slavic cul-de-sac village. The village’s history also includes the church, with its Baroque pulpit altar and other dated features. Balow lies in a typically Mecklenburg landscape in the southeast of the Ludwigslust-Parchim district; the KUK complements local cultural offerings with traditional Advent concerts.

Village Structure and Local History

Balow was laid out as a Slavic cul-de-sac village with two village centres and a single access point. These features relate to the layout and access of the village, not to a single building. Those interested in historic village structures can therefore consider them as a separate topic alongside the church: while the settlement pattern describes the village as a whole, the altar, nave and historic chair draw attention to specific architectural and furnishing details. This offers two ways of looking at the village’s history—from the layout of the village to individual objects.

Church and Historic Furnishings

The church in Balow has a Baroque pulpit altar dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Its nave features pilasters in the Late Renaissance style. These architectural features sit side by side: the Baroque altar and the Late Renaissance design of the nave. The furnishings also include a carved armchair dating from 1705. At the time, it was used as a bridal chair. In addition to its architectural features, the chair offers a dated history of use and thus another way to explore the church.

Culture and Events

At Balow’s KUK, Advent concerts traditionally take place over four days and are performed by the SwingSide BigBand. If these concerts are important to your travel plans, check the current dates and performers in advance. Since 2012, the KUK has also had an outdoor area for fitness activities.

Depending on the weather, the KUK or the Kulturarena, right next to Balow Primary School, is used for major events such as school enrolment celebrations and school festivals. These venues are therefore also used for school events. On 29 May 2026, Balow held its traditional maypole-raising ceremony, which drew a large number of visitors.

More to Explore in the Wider Ludwigslust-Parchim Destination

In the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination, Ludwigslust Palace offers a different historical perspective. It was the former residence of the Mecklenburg dukes and forms an ensemble with the park and town, described as the “Little Versailles of the North”. The almost completely preserved late Baroque town layout includes a former court church and an English-style landscape park. The palace presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries.

In Dömitz, the museum in the fortress focuses on the history of the fortress and town, as well as the Elbe, harbour and bridges, Fritz Reuter, and special and art exhibitions. The Dömitz Citadel is another architectural highlight: modelled on Italian examples, this Renaissance fortress is pentagonal, with bastions, casemates and a drawbridge. For a nature experience in the wider destination, the calcareous fen near Zarrentin is part of the Schaalelauf Nature Reserve; visitors can explore it from the nature trail.
