Dobbertin Monastery stands on a peninsula in Lake Dobbertin. Dobbertin, together with the monastery and its associated park, also lies on the lake’s north shore. The monastery complex and lake therefore shape the character of the village together: Dobbertin combines a distinctive cultural theme with a specific waterside location.

Dobbertin by the Lake: Location and Landscape

Lake Dobbertin lies in the Mecklenburg Lake District, north of Goldberg. It is about 5.4 kilometres long and at most one kilometre wide, so its length is considerably greater than its maximum width. These dimensions give the lake a clear spatial context. It also lies within both the “Mittleres Mildenitztal” landscape protection area and Nossentiner-Schwinzer Heide Nature Park.

In the municipality, Dobbiner Plage is a nature reserve and a destination for hiking. The drained lake lies between Dobbertin and Below, right by the Mildenitz breakthrough valley. This adds a different landscape feature to Lake Dobbertin: Dobbiner Plage is identified as a hiking destination and is also characterised by its location in the breakthrough valley.

Monastery History and a Building Dating from 1825

Dobbertin Monastery was founded in 1220 and is a listed building and archaeological monument of significance beyond the region. The designation combines two perspectives on the site: the structure above ground and the monument beneath the ground. The monastery is therefore more than a single building in Dobbertin’s history; it is a defining part of the village’s past.

A later chapter with a precise date is the seed house in Dobbertin. Built in 1825, it was used to dry fir cones and obtain seeds for the monastery’s own forestry operation. This use also brings a practical aspect of the monastery’s history to life. While the monastery’s foundation dates back to 1220, the seed house points to a specific later forestry-related purpose.

Krugscheune, Exhibitions and Monastery Café

Krugscheune is a cultural centre in Dobbertin and houses the tourist information office. Its galleries regularly host exhibitions by artists from the region. The monastery café in the brewery serves freshly baked cakes, coffee creations, ice cream and dishes from the brewery kitchen. Culture and a place to stop for refreshments can thus be planned as distinct parts of a visit.

The second-hand shop is also part of the monastery’s public areas. It can be visited during the day without prior arrangement.

Cycling as Another Highlight

Cycle Route 5 starts in Dobbertin and is about 22 kilometres long. Its approximate length helps you gauge the scope of the ride.

Another Cultural Highlight in Ludwigslust-Parchim

In the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim travel region, Ludwigslust Palace is another cultural highlight. It was the former residence of the dukes of Mecklenburg and, together with its park and town, forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North”. The palace is also the centrepiece of an almost completely preserved late-Baroque town complex, with a former court church and an English-style landscape park. The palace presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
