The neo-Gothic village church, with its unusual altarpiece history, the porcelain craft and Sukow’s location on the edge of the Lewitz appeal to a range of interests. Details such as the bells, organ and the church’s construction history also give the town a multifaceted character. When planning your stay, you can decide whether culture, craftsmanship or the landscape will shape your visit. Sukow also has its own railway station on the Schwerin–Parchim line; check the current timetable before travelling.
Church: Construction history and special details
The present-day village church is neo-Gothic and is already the third church to stand on this site. Schwerin architect Theodor KrĂĽger designed the building; after three years of construction, it was consecrated in 1883. During work on the church, a triptych from a former chapel was rediscovered. The panels depict the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and the Entombment of Jesus. The back notes that David Hille, a court painter from Schwerin, painted the work in 1700.
The furnishings also reflect different periods: the church received an organ in 1908, and three bells now hang in the tower. Two bronze bells, newly cast after the Second World War, were consecrated in a festive service in 1969. The smallest bell dates from 1614; Heinrich Jaeger recounts its eventful history in a poem for the bell consecration of 1930. The Uhlenpark is also next to the church. Well-kept green spaces, park benches and a wooden pavilion offer a place to linger.
Porcelain: Watch or make your own
There are several ways to explore porcelain craftsmanship in Sukow. In her workshop, porcelain painter and designer Kerstin Behrens welcomes visitors to watch her at work. Courses at the porcelain manufactory offer a hands-on option: participants can create their own small porcelain artworks, discover their artistic abilities and learn about working in a porcelain manufactory. The First Mecklenburg Porcelain Manufactory also makes hand-painted one-of-a-kind pieces to customers’ specifications. Watching, making your own piece in a course and exploring handcrafted one-off items offer different ways to engage with the subject.
The Lewitz and equestrian sports
Sukow lies on the edge of the Lewitz landscape and nature reserve. Horse lovers can swap their bicycle saddle for a riding saddle for a few hours, or take a carriage ride through the Lewitz area. Sukow has developed into a stronghold of equestrian sports over many years. If you plan to go riding or take a carriage ride, check the current arrangements in advance.
In the district of Zietlitz: farm and trails
Zietlitz is also part of the municipality of Sukow, but the district should be distinguished from the village of Sukow itself. The North German Children’s Farm was established there in 2007 as a project for the Lewitz external site of the 2009 Federal Horticultural Show in Schwerin. The farm gives visitors a glimpse of country life. A large, rustic round barn hosts a range of events. If an event is the reason for your visit, check the dates in advance.
Local trail names in Zietlitz include Bodderwech, an old path from Zietlitz Forest to Raben Steinfeld Forest in the direction of Schwerin. From Zietlitz, cycling routes lead towards Pinnow and Schwerin, as well as into the Lewitz landscape reserve. This information helps distinguish places and routes within the municipality: the children’s farm and the routes mentioned are in Zietlitz, not in the village of Sukow.
