Stedesdorf has a clear historical focus: St. Aegidius Church brings together a distinctive ecclesiastical history and architectural and decorative features from several centuries. There is also a boules court in the village square. Alongside exploring the area’s history, visitors can therefore enjoy a local leisure activity and consider practical travel arrangements.

St. Aegidius Church: Architectural History and Ecclesiastical Role

St. Aegidius Church was the seat of a medieval church with judicial authority over eleven churches. In 1420, Stedesdorf exercised the right to hold synods over the largest synodal district in the northern Archbishopric of Bremen. During the time of the chieftains, Stedesdorf, Thunum and Dunum formed a lordship in Harlingerland. Ecclesiastical jurisdiction and the history of regional rule can thus be viewed as two distinct aspects of the area’s history.

The church’s architectural history also spans several centuries: the western part dates from the 12th century; the eastern part and the choir were added in the 15th century. The bell tower was added in 1695. The original ground plan is considered unique in East Frisia. The sequence of building elements makes clear that the church cannot be reduced to a single construction phase.

The furnishings include a baptismal font made of Baumberg sandstone from the early 13th century and a Renaissance winged altarpiece from 1613. The hexagonal pulpit is early Baroque and dates from 1635. The organ was built by Valentin Ulrich Grotian in 1696. For those interested in architectural and church history, these dated features offer several points of interest, though they do not all come from the same period.

Boules and Getting Your Bearings Locally

There is a boules court in the village square. Boules is a sport similar to boccia; the equipment is looked after by local residents and provided on request. If you plan to play a game, bear in mind that you will need to get the equipment from the residents.

More Cultural and Natural Attractions in Wittmund

Wittmund itself has its own cultural and landscape attractions. The Peldemühle was built in 1741 to husk barley, with a residential building and barn; it is the oldest single-storey gallery Dutch windmill in northwestern Germany. Wittmund’s pedestrian zone is home to the “Hands of Fame” promenade. It includes the unique-in-Germany “Bundespräsidentenplatz” (Federal President’s Square), which was inaugurated in 2010.

The Robert von Zeppelin and Aviation Museum opened in Wittmund’s pedestrian zone in June 2015. It presents Wittmund’s regional history, which is closely tied to aviation, and introduces the historic “Wittmundhafen” airfield in particular to young people. Exhibits include aviation memorabilia, works of art by local artists and other items.

Wittmund Forest is another distinct landscape attraction: it covers more than 700 hectares and has several hiking trails as well as paths for woodland walks and cycling. The forest contains a circular moor described as a glacial Pingo ruin, with a viewing platform and bench. These attractions complement Stedesdorf’s historical focus with other cultural and landscape features specifically located in Wittmund.
