For a break in Sauensiek, the forest route, natural swimming pool and Litberg offer three different ways to explore the area: cycling, swimming and taking in views across the Geest. As a specific camping option, the Sauensiek campsite at Klindworths Gasthof has 70 pitches. Check current availability before booking.

Cycling Route, Views and Swimming

The forest route is an easy, 46.69-kilometre circular tour. It passes through Sauensiek and leads to the 65-metre-high Litberg. Its observation tower offers far-reaching views across the Geest landscape.

Along the route, the Sauensiek natural swimming pool offers a chlorine-free place to swim, with pebbles and plants. The pool welcomes visitors for a swim or a full day at the outdoor pool. It is run by an association and volunteers from Sauensiek and the surrounding villages. There is no lifeguard; swimming and visiting are at your own risk. Check the latest information about swimming operations before visiting.

Staying Overnight and Spending Time Outdoors

The area around the Sauensiek campsite is ideal for long walks and cycle rides through the Lower Saxony countryside. In addition to the signposted circular route, it offers another way to spend time outdoors on foot.

Getting There and the Regional Setting

The area of the joint municipality of Apensen, which includes Sauensiek, can be reached by regional trains from Buxtehude and Bremervörde. Check the current connections before travelling, as they may change.

If you drive from the Sittensen exit on the A1 towards Horneburg, the Altes Land am Elbstrom holiday region begins in Sauensiek, shortly after the motorway exit. Road conditions and signage may change; check them before travelling.

Stade as the Wider Setting

The landscape across the wider Stade destination is varied: Stade district is characterised by the broad marshes along the Elbe, the cultural landscape of the Altes Land, river valleys in the Geest and untamed raised bogs. These landscapes offer opportunities for local recreation and nature observation. Four signposted long-distance cycling routes cross the Altes Land am Elbstrom holiday region; check current route conditions before setting out.

Within the broader Stade destination, you can distinguish between Sauensiek’s cycling and nature themes and the maritime offerings in Wischhafen. The Kehdinger Küstenschiffahrts-Museum includes the coastal motor vessel MS IRIS-JÖRG, which visitors can board in the adjacent listed harbour. You can also earn the Kehdinger Matrosenpatent at the museum. Along the Wischhafen Maritime Walk, information signs about maritime topics can be found at many points. Information boards and a leaflet available at the tourist information office and museum provide information about the region’s crafts, trade, and historic locks and ferries.

The Wischhafen, Alter Schulweg stop is about 200 metres from the Kehdinger KĂĽstenschiffahrts-Museum; bus route 2025 runs from there to Stade and Freiburg. As bus services may change, check the current timetable before travelling.
