Horneburg combines a rich church history with rural crafts and circular tours on foot or by bicycle. This offers a range of options for planning your visit: historic sites, a museum collection, routes through the countryside or a stroll in the castle park.
Church history and historic routes
The Church of Our Lady was first mentioned in 1396. It was completely destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War and rebuilt in 1632. The dates mark two separate milestones: its first mention and its later reconstruction. The church stands where historic roads from Buxtehude to Stade and from the Geest to the Altes Land region once met. Its history can therefore also be connected to the area’s former routes.
Crafts at the museum
The interactive Horneburg Handicrafts Museum focuses on the history of crafts in Horneburg and rural trades. These include wheelwrighting, saddlery and cooperage. The exhibits showcase a range of crafts and activities rather than focusing on a single trade. The museum also has a collection of wagons and carriages. The grounds also feature an inn dating from 1830—a historic coaching inn for travelers with horse-drawn vehicles.
Educational programs for school classes use old tools and craft techniques. Guided tours for groups are available by arrangement. If you are planning a group visit, arrange it in advance. The museum is a short walk from Horneburg station, which may be helpful when planning your visit.
Hiking and cycling on circular routes
The circular routes vary considerably in their mode of travel and length. The hiking route “Through the Auetal Valley over the Heights to Bliedersdorf” is an easy 10.19-kilometer circular hike. It starts and ends at Horneburg station. Via Daudieck, the route passes through the protected Auetal floodplain before returning to Horneburg. Along the way, follow the Route 5 Auetal markers.
The easy Steinroute cycling trail is a 40.16-kilometer circular route starting and ending in Horneburg. It passes through woodland and the Auetal floodplain. The route also offers views towards the orchards of the Altes Land region and the Elbe. Compared with the shorter hike, the Steinroute is the longer circular tour; you can compare the two options by activity and distance.
Castle park and getting there
The castle park offers another way to spend time outdoors: old trees, broad meadows and well-kept paths invite you to stroll and linger. It complements the marked circular routes with a place where the walk itself can take center stage.
The Handicrafts Museum is a short walk from Horneburg station. Parking is available at the station. Regular train services run via Stade to Cuxhaven and to Hamburg. Check the current timetable for your travel dates if you are planning specific departures.
