Rodenberg combines a rich local history with practical opportunities for hiking and cycling. At its heart is the former Ständehaus; for outdoor activities, there is a hiking route that starts and ends in the town centre, as well as trails throughout the joint municipality. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first plan your stay around what interests you most: the museum and historic site, or longer days on hiking and cycling trails.

Ständehaus and Water Castle

Museum Rodenberg has been housed in the former Ständehaus since 1981. It is the last surviving building of the former Rodenberg water castle, following the town fire of 1859. The castle was probably built in the 13th century at an important crossing of the floodplain. The Ständehaus served as a meeting place for the Schaumburg estates until 1640. Several layers of history therefore come together in one building: the presumed origins of the water castle and the later use of the Ständehaus as a meeting place.

A bastion, a rondel and two defensive barriers on the former castle grounds were excavated, secured and partly restored between 2000 and 2004. The open-air site includes two artillery towers, a wall and a moat. It is considered a unique ensemble of fortification architecture from this period in northern Germany. The structural features give the historic site a different character from the museum exhibits: here, the focus is on fortifications and the castle grounds; there, on the history of the town and its ways of life.

Museum, Agriculture and Mill

Museum Rodenberg places the town’s early and urban history in the context of agriculture and crafts. Agricultural tools and machines illustrate a complete annual work cycle, including an original old tractor. The oldest exhibits date from the 18th century. Clothing also shows how dress varied according to the occasion. The museum therefore brings into focus both work tools and their use throughout the year, and objects from different areas of life.

Another historical landmark is the Rodenberg windmill, built on the Alten Rodenberg in 1850. Together with the Ständehaus and the castle complex, it shows that the town’s history is not limited to a single era.

Hiking and Cycling

The landscape of the joint municipality of Rodenberg lies in a valley between the wooded ridges of the Deister, Süntel and Bückeberg. Hiking and cycling trails run through the area and connect the municipalities. This is a broader geographical setting than the circular hiking route that starts and ends in the town centre: the municipal visitor guide from March 2024 describes the “Weite Aussichten” (“Wide Views”) route as approximately 15 kilometres long.

For a longer cycling tour, the marked Deisterkreisel offers a different scale. It is about 80 kilometres long and connects Rodenberg with Springe, Wennigsen, Barsinghausen, Bad Nenndorf and Bad MĂĽnder. All sections can be reached by bus and train, so you can explore the circular route in stages. The two route distances refer to different outings: a hike of around 15 kilometres and a much longer cycling route. Before travelling, check current trail conditions and public transport connections.

When planning, you can choose between a clearly defined hike in the town centre and a multi-stage cycling tour. The trails throughout the joint municipality connect other municipalities; the Deisterkreisel also leads to the towns named above.
