Lebenstedt has two very different focal points: Salzgitter Lake and its leisure activities, and places where the city’s history and church architecture can be experienced firsthand. When choosing where to stay, you can decide whether you’d rather spend time by the water or explore the district’s historical sites.

Salzgitter Lake: Water Sports and Other Leisure Attractions

The 75-hectare Salzgitter Lake lies on the western edge of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt. It is a water sports venue for sailing, windsurfing, rowing and canoeing. On an island in the lake, Lebenstedt has a permanent 12-hole disc golf course. The pirate playground is on the east shore. The ice rink at Salzgitter Lake has an ice surface measuring 1,800 square metres. This means different activities sit side by side at the same lake: water sports, disc golf, an ice rink and a playground. Check the current conditions at the relevant facility before planning a specific visit.

City History and Memorial Sites

The monument to the city’s history stands in the centre of Lebenstedt. It was created by Braunschweig sculptor Professor Jürgen Weber and unveiled to the public in 1995. The monument commemorates the development of the industrial area and city under National Socialism, as well as forced labour at the Reichswerke. Its subject matter gives the city’s history a solemn focus, distinctly different from the leisure activities at the lake.

About 4,000 victims from more than 15 nations are buried at the Jammertal memorial cemetery. Visitors can locate graves using a coordinate system and cemetery map. This provides practical guidance for anyone visiting the cemetery to find a particular grave.

Churches, Architectural History and City Park

St. Andrew’s Church is the oldest church in the Lebenstedt district. Its shell was completed in August 1858, and it was consecrated on 28 August 1859. The dates of St. John’s Church tell a different chapter of post-war history: its foundation stone was laid on 7 October 1954, and it was consecrated on 2 September 1956. The Protestant church is near the city park, at the end of Am Saldergraben street.

The city park in the centre of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt is home to around 900 trees, including many exotic species, as well as a park pond. St. John’s Church’s proximity to the park makes them distinct places to visit in this part of town: one is a public green space with a pond and trees, the other a church with its own history.

Martin Luther Church also offers a glimpse into the area’s architecture and congregational history. Because of the quicksand in the ground, it was designed as a lightweight reinforced-concrete structure, with a trapezoidal interior. A baptismal bowl is still used there today. It was hammered out of a grenade casing by a baker with a talent for craftsmanship. It was already used for baptisms in the congregation’s first meeting place, the Krähenkrug inn.

More to Explore in the Wider Salzgitter Destination

Beyond Lebenstedt’s local attractions, the wider Salzgitter destination offers other cultural and nature-related experiences. The Städtisches Museum Schloss Salder presents exhibitions across 5,000 square metres in a Renaissance castle built in 1608 and its outbuildings. The subject matter ranges from geological history and prehistory to the Middle Ages and the early modern period of the 20th century.

In the museum grounds, the 2,000-square-metre Ice Age Garden illustrates the importance of nature and climate to human cultural development in an Ice Age environment. It is open during museum hours; check the current opening times before your visit. The wider Salzgitter destination also has two geo-trails: circular hiking routes between 6.5 and 8 kilometres long, starting from Lichtenberg Castle or Hamberg and passing through the beech forest of the landscape conservation area. The museum and hiking attractions broaden the view beyond Lebenstedt without conflating them with the district’s own offerings.
