For a trip to the Harz that combines local history with a specific hiking destination, Zorge is worth a closer look. The town lies in the heart of the Harz Nature Park on the Zorge River; half-timbered houses, industrial history and distinctive buildings offer different ways to spend your time here. At the edge of town, a hiking trail leads to the waterfall at Neuer Teich. If you are looking for accommodation, you can start by considering whether local history, landscape or a combination of the two should shape your stay.

Industrial History and Local History Museum

Zorge’s industrial history includes the production, in 1842, of the first steam locomotive for the state railway of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg. It is therefore considered the first locomotive manufactured in Germany. Visitors can see a full-size model and a Normag tractor produced there in Zorge. The local history museum presents more of the town’s history and combines technical exhibits with a broader collection: more than 2,500 exhibits include objects from the everyday life of a mining village across several centuries.

The museum building also has a history of its own. Chief Forestry Commissioner Zacharias Koch had it built in 1681; it served as a chief forester’s office until 1938. The local history museum has been housed there since 1988. In Zorge, the early development of technology and a historic building with changing uses thus stand side by side, while the collection offers a glimpse into everyday life in a mining village.

Landmarks in the Townscape

Among the defining buildings are the Protestant St. Bartholomew’s Church, which has shaped Zorge’s townscape since 1853, and the freestanding yellow bell tower above the town. The listed tower is a landmark of Zorge and has belonged to the Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz Foundation since 1934. The church and tower offer two different starting points for a walk through the town’s architectural history: on one hand, a church that has long shaped the townscape, and on the other, a freestanding landmark above Zorge.

Hiking Destination and Viewpoint

If you would also like to combine your stay with a hike, the trail to the waterfall at Neuer Teich starts at the edge of town. Another named viewpoint is “Pferdchen” (Little Horse), above the South Harz community of Zorge. It lies at an elevation of about 430 metres. The waterfall at Neuer Teich is a separate destination from “Pferdchen,” the viewpoint above Zorge.

Spirits from Zorge

Hercynian Distilling Co., also known as Hammerschmiede, has been producing spirits since 1985. The distillery is known in Zorge for its fine spirits; visitor offerings include a shop and tours of the production facilities. Check dates and visitor information in advance. This visitor experience adds a locally produced specialty to the town’s history, without requiring you to plan around a specific schedule.

More Cultural Attractions in the Wider Destination of Walkenried

In the wider destination of Walkenried, the Kloster-Erkenntnisweg (Monastery Discovery Trail) is a themed circular trail with 13 stops in Walkenried and around Walkenried Abbey. Illustrated information boards provide details about locations within the medieval monastery precinct. The World Heritage Information Centre in Walkenried offers a free, partly interactive exhibition on the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Mines of Rammelsberg, Historic Town of Goslar and Upper Harz Water Management System” and is the first of three information centres dedicated to this World Heritage Site. A 3D landscape model and video projection illustrate the transformation of the 3,000-year-old cultural landscape in the western Harz. Check the opening details before visiting.

Guided tours of the abbey and the exhibition are also offered in Walkenried. They cover the everyday life of the White Monks, as well as the origins, rise and crisis of the medieval Walkenried monastic enterprise. Check the current schedule and booking information in advance. These cultural attractions are in Walkenried and are distinct from the local sights and hiking destinations in Zorge.
